Optically transparent armour reinforced with microbially-synthesized cellulose nanofibres with self-repair capability
  Dr K Lee
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Microbially-synthesised cellulose nanofibres, more commonly known as bacterial cellulose (BC), is an ultra-pure form of cellulose nanofibers with mechanical performance exceeding that of single E-glass or Kevlar fibre.
PhD Studentship (Sponsored by Lloyds Register Foundation) - Protection of offshore wind turbines using low-cost, damage tolerant, sacrificial coatings (ProCoat) (NSIRC 179)
  Dr S Paul
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Mitigating corrosion of offshore structures requires the use of cathodic protection often in conjunction with dielectric coatings.
Characterising thermal fatigue at mix points in industrial piping (NSIRC 227)
Mr A Basso, Dr T London
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Background. Industrial pipelines are extensively used to transport fluids at high temperatures and pressures. This scope is crucial, especially for the Oil & Gas and Nuclear sectors, which are concerned about sharp temperature gradient fields.

Geophysical assessment of Lime/Clay grout injection of estuary and reservoir embankments subject to badgers burrows erosion
  Dr P Sentenac
Application Deadline: 30 September 2019

Funding Type

PhD Type

According to studies, 46 % of dams and embankments failures are due to severe internal erosion (Foster et al., 2000). Animal burrowing can lead to a preferential path for the water flow and seepage through the flood embankments that could lead to a partial or total collapse of the structure.
