  Prof S De Liberatp
Application Deadline: 31 March 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Supervisor. Prof. Simone De Liberato. Project description. We are offering a PhD position at the interface between theoretical quantum optics and condensed matter physics, suitable for a candidate aiming to translate fundamental physical concepts into futuristic technology.
Ultrafast reconfigurable Nanophotonics, Plasmonics and Metamaterials
Research Group: Quantum, Light & Matter
  Prof O L Muskens
Application Deadline: 31 August 2020

Supervisor. Prof. Otto Muskens. Project description. Applications are invited for a postgraduate researcher to join a research project in the Integrated Nanophotonics group at the University of Southampton.
Fully funded PhD studentship in Computational Chemistry
  Dr D Palmer
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

A fully funded, three year PhD Studentship is available in the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry at the University of Strathclyde under the supervision of Dr David Palmer (Strathclyde).
  Sub-wavelength all-dielectric nano-photonics: 2D materials and beyond
  Research Group: Inorganic Semiconductors
  Prof A Tartakovskii
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

So far nano-photonics has dealt with dielectric devices relying on confining light in diffraction-limited volumes. Beating the diffraction limit by confining light on sub-wavelength scales has been only possible with plasmonic structures made of nano-structured metal, which unavoidably suffer from large optical losses.
EPSRC DTP studentship: Quantum coherence in single biomolecules measured by multidimensional optical micro-spectroscopy
Prof W W Langbein, Prof P Borri, Dr E Muljarov, Dr F Masia
Application Deadline: 31 March 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Life is based on the intricate interactions between a multitude of biomolecules, including lipids, proteins, and DNA. They are dynamical in nature and maintain the non-equilibrium state of life.
Making monoatomic layers by physical methods
  Dr R Boya
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Following the discovery of graphene, many self-standing, stable, single atomic layers such as boron nitride (BN), molybdenum disulphide (MoS2), tungsten disulphide (WS2) etc., have been isolated.
  Correlated non-equilibrium quantum matter
  Dr Arijeet Pal
Application Deadline: 28 February 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

The dynamics of interacting quantum systems host a variety of fascinating phenomena. Recent developments include new non-equilibrium phases of matter characterised by many-body localization and time-crystallinity.
