Numerical study of global properties of general relativistic space-times
  Prof J Frauendiner
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

This project is part of a larger research program which tries to study the global structure of space-times by numerically solving the conformal field equations, a system of partial differential equations which is equivalent to the vacuum Einstein equations.
  Synthesis of Carbon-rich Molecular Materials
  Dr N Lucas
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

New carbon-rich molecular materials, based on well-defined nanographenes and other novel polyaromatic architectures, will be rationally synthesised to better understand structure-property relationships.
Numerical and analytical studies of early universe Einstein-Euler-scalar field models
  Dr F Beyer
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

The point of this project is to study the Einstein’ equation (as a model of gravity) coupled to the Euler equations (as a model of cosmological matter) and the scalar field equations (as a model of the “inflaton” driving “inflation”) in the cosmological setting close to a big bang singularity.
Numerical modelling of sediment transportation and surface roughness on vegetated coastal dune systems
  Assoc Prof S Wakes
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Coasts and coastal communities around the world are vulnerable to sea level increases and intensity of storm events. Vegetated sand dunes are relied upon for protection, buffering coastal communities from the sea.
Modelling wave-induced sea ice breakup on small and large scales
  Dr F Montiel
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Sea ice is a key component of the climate system, which is experiencing significant changes as a consequence of global warming. The rapidly decreasing sea ice extent in the Arctic Ocean means solar radiations are increasingly being absorbed into the ocean, causing further melting and weakening of the sea ice cover.
