Applying bioengineering to energy challenges: analysing and modelling electrical devices made using synthetic biological components
  Dr K Dunn
Application Deadline: 28 February 2019
Synthetic biology and bionanotechnology can be used to create electrical devices such as biophotovoltaics. These systems have the potential to make a significant impact in the renewable energy sector, but in order to make them effectively we need models that can predict how they will behave.
EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Soft Matter for Formulation and Industrial Innovation (SOFI2 CDT)
16 fully funded, four-year PhD studentships are available in the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Soft Matter for Formulation and Industrial Innovation (SOFI2 CDT) commencing in September 2019, for graduates in the physical and biological sciences, mathematics and engineering.
Finite element (FE) modelling of the additive manufacture (3D printing) of metals
  Prof A J Moore
Applications accepted all year round
Applications are invited for a fully-funded PhD studentship starting in September 2019. It is suitable for well-qualified students who have (or expect to obtain) a first class degree in engineering, physics or other relevant subject.
Industrial CASE PhD Studentship – Process fundamentals for the additive manufacture (3D printing) of metals
  Prof A J Moore
Applications accepted all year round
Applications are invited for a fully-funded EPSRC industrial CASE PhD studentship starting in September 2019. It is suitable for well-qualified students who have (or expect to obtain) a first class degree in engineering, physics or other relevant subject.
Computational Image Processing: Super-resolution restoration of microscopy images and its application in biological and biomedical imaging
  Dr W Lu
Application Deadline: 28 February 2019
Super-resolution microscopy is an emerging field that tries to overcome the resolution limit of conventional microscopy. This project will take a multi-disciplinary approach to this problem by combining the fields of image processing with microscopy imaging to develop a novel super-resolution restoration method.
Optical Ground Receivers for Satellite-Based Quantum Communications
  Dr R Donaldson
Application Deadline: 7 March 2019
Current demonstrations of satellite-based quantum communications have implemented ground stations which utilize existing large diameter telescopes, originally designed for other applications, such as astronomy.
Tracking granular flows using instrumented grains
  Dr S Papanicolopulos
Application Deadline: 30 June 2019
Granular materials are ubiquitous in nature (e.g. sand and other soils) and in industry (e.g. corn, sugar, detergents, pharmaceutical tablets, pellets).
Machine learning for hyperspectral computed tomography
  Dr N Polydorides
Application Deadline: 28 February 2019
Spectral/hyperspectral tomography aims to improve standard Computed Tomography by taking advantage of additional information in the form of energy-resolved measurements.
Doctor of Engineering (EngD): Development of Optoelectronic Sensor Systems to Support Materials Life Assessment (AWE)
  Prof D Reid
Application Deadline: 28 February 2019
The EngD is an alternative to a traditional PhD aimed at students wanting a career in industry. Students spend about 75% of their time working directly with a company in addition to receiving advanced-level training from a broad portfolio of technical and business courses.
Doctor of Engineering (EngD): Optical Communication and Image Processing for Space Applications (OCIPSA) (STAR-Dundee)
  Prof D Reid
Application Deadline: 28 February 2019
Project not available to non UK/EU applicants. The EngD is an alternative to a traditional PhD aimed at students wanting a career in industry.
