Applying bioengineering to energy challenges: analysing and modelling electrical devices made using synthetic biological components
  Dr K Dunn
Application Deadline: 28 February 2019
Synthetic biology and bionanotechnology can be used to create electrical devices such as biophotovoltaics. These systems have the potential to make a significant impact in the renewable energy sector, but in order to make them effectively we need models that can predict how they will behave.
Understanding the genetic basis for Ramularia disease resistance in barley
  Dr N Havis
Application Deadline: 3 March 2019
Ramularia leaf spot (RLS), caused by the fungus Ramularia collo-cygni, is a major disease of barley in many temperate countries. The disease has a long latent phase in the plant before symptoms appear, typically after flowering, leading to reduced grain yield and quality.
Novel biomarkers to predict individual risk for pasture-associated laminitis in ponies
  Dr P Morrison
Application Deadline: 3 March 2019
Laminitis (of which pasture-associated laminitis (PAL) is the most common presentation) is a common and often fatal disease, initially presenting as severe foot pain.
Holistic approach to internal parasites in hill and upland sheep farms
  Dr C Morgan-Davies
Application Deadline: 3 March 2019
This PhD will investigate ways to optimise internal parasite control (roundworms and liver fluke) in hill and upland sheep, to address the issue of increased resistance to anthelmintics in flocks.
Design of novel scaffolds in kidney tissue engineering for use in drug development
  Dr A Callanan
Application Deadline: 26 February 2019
Applications are invited for postgraduate research leading to a PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering within the subject area of Tissue Engineering.
Tissue engineering of cartilage scaffolds for the treatment of osteoarthritis
  Dr A Callanan
Application Deadline: 26 February 2019
Applications are invited for postgraduate research leading to a PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering within the subject area of Tissue Engineering.
Tissue engineering design of novel bio-therapeutics for cancer treatment
  Dr A Callanan
Application Deadline: 26 February 2019
Applications are invited for postgraduate research leading to a PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering within the subject area of Tissue Engineering.
Novel extremophilic metalloprotease for consumer product application
Research Group: Institute of Quantitative Biology, Biochemistry and Biotechnology
  Prof S Rosser
Applications accepted all year round
This PhD project will identify and characterise novel protease enzymes from extremophiles for use in processes and products of interest to the industrial collaborator Unilever.
Improving recovery after a heart attack using non-coding RNA
Prof A Baker, Dr M Brittan
Application Deadline: 28 February 2019
This project is one of 9 four-year PhD Studentships funded by Medical Research Scotland (http://www.medicalresearchscotland.org.uk) to be delivered jointly by the named University and Company.
Understanding signalling networks during malaria parasite infection and transmission
Research Group: Institute of Immunology & Infection Research
  Dr N Philip
Application Deadline: 1 March 2019
Malaria threatens around 400 million people globally and results in over 0.5 million deaths annually, thereby continuing to be a major public health problem.
