Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy for subsea applications
Dr T Thevar, Dr K Nakkeeran
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) is a widely used technique to obtain the elemental constituents of a sample. The process uses a short pulse of focused laser light to evaporate a minute volume of a target substance by highly localized heating to temperatures greater than 5000 K.
PhD Studentship NSIRC 229 – Prediction of Step Wise Cracking due to Hydrogen attack in steel vessels using finite element stress analysis and acoustic emission.
  Dr S Soua
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Background. Corrosion has been prevalent in our lives since ancient times. It can be caused by many chemicals and substances such as hydrogen.
PhD Studentship (Sponsored by Lloyds Register Foundation) - Local detection of hydrogen in steels using neutron diffraction imaging (NSIRC 177)
  Dr K Govender
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Background. Steels used in offshore flowlines, pipelines and risers are susceptible to corrosion fatigue in the presence of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and moisture present in oil and gas production fluids.
Improving the accuracy of displacement measurements and earthquake hazard maps from radar interferometry
Prof A Hooper, Prof T Wright
Application Deadline: 6 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

This exciting project aims to improve the accuracy of deformation measurements made from Space and apply this to improve our understanding of where earthquakes will occur.
Characterising thermal fatigue at mix points in industrial piping (NSIRC 227)
Mr A Basso, Dr T London
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Background. Industrial pipelines are extensively used to transport fluids at high temperatures and pressures. This scope is crucial, especially for the Oil & Gas and Nuclear sectors, which are concerned about sharp temperature gradient fields.
