Modelling of primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) of nickel based alloys (NBAs) in nuclear (PWR) primary coolant
  Prof M C Smith, Dr A Jivkov
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Nickel based alloy (NBA) materials and their associated weld metals are of interest to new build and advanced nuclear reactors due to their superior structural performance when compared with traditional steel materials.
Modelling environmentally assisted cracking in Ni-based superalloys
Dr P Shanthraj, Dr J Fonseca
Application Deadline: 15 September 2019

Funding Type

PhD Type

Ni-based superalloys in aircraft engines are routinely subjected to temperatures in the range of 650-700oC during operating conditions.
Source mechanics of fluid driven volcanic Earthquakes
Dr P Benson, Dr G Tozzi
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Applications are invited for a self-funded, 3 year full time PhD, to commence in October 2019 or February 2020. The PhD will be based in the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences and will be supervised by Dr.
An investigation into Soft Tissue Biomechanics Using Computational Fluid Dynamics
  Dr M Lappa
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Aim of the present project is the modelling and numerical simulation of soft-tissue growth in rotating bioreactors and related morphological evolution.
Ultraprecision machining in Silicon Carbide - Ref: ARUF2518
  Dr A Roy
Application Deadline: 3 May 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Silicon carbide is of great importance as a structural ceramic as it is amongst the hardest materials known. Machining silicon carbide parts into the required shape and form for a given application is extremely difficult, yielding unwanted defects.
Assessing Sustainability Impact of Software Systems - MScR in Global Environmental Challenges
  Dr R Chitchyan
Application Deadline: 1 August 2019

Funding Type

PhD Type

About the Project. Software, which pervades more and more areas of societal life, has become the invisible driver of our business practices, home routines, and leisure activities.
Making the link between weld process and long term in-service performance: multi-scale modelling and characterisation for low alloy steel welds in advanced nuclear reactors
  Prof M C Smith, Dr J Francis
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

High-value, low-volume, safety-critical metallic components in nuclear plants almost invariably contain welds. Welding is an aggressive process that causes microstructural changes in the weld and adjacent heat affected zone, develops residual stresses and structural distortion, and changes the material properties.
