Developing novel insecticidal proteins for crop protection

Project Overview. Undertake a cutting-edge PhD research project at the UoY’s Centre for Novel Agricultural Products (CNAP), focused on addressing one of the most pressing challenges in agriculture. Read more

Competition in the brain: the neural basis of behavioural decision-making

Life as an animal is a constant process of choosing between actions. do I look for food, escape from a predator, find a mate, or stay on the sofa? Many of these actions are mutually exclusive, so decisions must carefully balance the importance of the animal’s various needs. Read more

Project at Aberystwyth University: Genome editing enhanced myxobacterial predators for biological control of diverse crop pathogens

Pathogens have a huge impact on conventional agriculture by decreasing yield and increasing spoilage. They also threaten the security of alternative agricultural systems such as hydroponics/vertical farming/insect farming/cultured meat. Read more

Project at University of Reading: Optimising above and belowground ecosystem services for sustainable crop production

UK agriculture could play a central role in reaching NET ZERO by 2050 and halting biodiversity loss. Agriculture is a significant contributor to UK emissions (10%), and intensive farming practices and habitat loss are key drivers of species declines. Read more

Evaluation of semiochemicals sourced from trap crop and host plants as attractant for spotting bugs

Project description. Are you passionate about developing innovative solutions for horticultural pest control? We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate in chemical ecology to join a groundbreaking project focused on developing novel attractants for fruit and banana spotting bugs. Read more

China Scholarship Council: Molecular interplay in plant-aphid-virus interactions

Aphid-transmitted plant viruses pose a major threat to potato crop production. Among the non-persistent viruses, potyviruses, such as PVY and PVA, cause significant economic damage. Read more

Determining the impact of grazing and cropping on tropical wildlife

This PhD is a field-intensive project involving various automated and hands-on methods to quantify wildlife use of impacted landscapes (grazing, clearing, and cropping). You will be using acoustic survey methods combined with camera trapping, and traditional trapping and searching, to detect vertebrates and invertebrates in very HOT and REMOTE locations in tropical Queensland Australia.
