Ocean eyes: Developing novel optical chemical measurements of trace elements

Project Advert. Scientific background. The availability of iron (Fe) plays a key role in carbon dioxide drawdown and climate regulation as it can limit phytoplankton growth and the ‘biological pump’ in vast ocean regions. Read more

NERC GW4+ DTP studentship: Early Evolution of the Palaeogene Mull Volcano: An Integrated Volcanological, Geochemical and Geochronological Approach

Project background. Volcanological and petrogenetic research in the various eroded volcanic centres of the North Atlantic Palaeogene Igneous Province (NAPIP) have greatly informed our understanding of processes in both caldera volcanoes and flood basalt magmatism (e.g., Gooday et al., 2018). The impact of continental break-up on the global carbon cycle

Project Rationale. The rupture of continents and the formation of new ocean basins are perhaps the most dramatic phenomena in global tectonics but these processes are rarely shown in text book cartoons of the plate tectonic and biogeochemical cycles (e.g., Kelemen & Manning, 2015). Read more

Resolving Antarctic meltwater events in Southern Ocean marine sediments and exploring their significance using climate models

Project Rationale. The principal aim of this project is to better understand the role of the Antarctic ice sheet in global sea level and rapid climate change by reconstructing Antarctic glacial discharge and modelling the impact of these freshwater fluxes on ocean circulation and climate. NERC GW4+ DTP studentship: Carbon Dioxide Weathering of Glacial Rock Flour: Implications for Post-Snowball Increase in Seawater Phosphate Content and Atmospheric Oxygenation

Project background. It has been suggested that the delivery of glacial rock flour to seawater during the melting of the Neoproterozoic Snowball earth glaciations 720-650 million years (Myr) ago, stimulated ocean-atmosphere oxygenation by providing nutrients to primary producers. Read more
