Plastic in rivers: transport, behaviour and fate (CENTA2-SGGE16-GABB)
Prof S E Gabbott, Dr C Russell, Prof S Rice
Application Deadline: 10 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Rivers feed the world’s oceans with freshwater, sediment and more recently with large quantities of plastic. Estimates of the amount of plastic entering the environment via fluvial systems are challenging to constrain and range from 4.8-12.7 million tonnes in 2010 (Jambeck et al., 2015).
Microplastic characteristics, fluxes and accumulation in the Atlantic Ocean
Prof R Lampitt, Prof A Cundy, Dr A Horton, Dr K Pabortsava
Application Deadline: 3 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Project Rationale. Plastic contamination of the oceans is of considerable concern and may cause significant damage to ecosystem structure and function.
The origin of pseudotachylytes in seismogenic fault zones and their role during slow interseismic creep
Dr E Mariani, Prof D Faulkner, Dr L Menegon, Prof G Di Toro
Application Deadline: 10 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

The aim of this project is to gain insight into the processes that control the seismic cycle by investigating the relationship between pseudotachylytes and associated mylonites in present-day as well as ancient seismogenic fault zones.
Microplastic hotspots on the deep seafloor: Investigating the role of seafloor currents in microplastic transport and accumulation
Dr M Clare, Prof A Cundy, Dr A Horton, Dr I Kane
Application Deadline: 3 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Project Rationale. There is growing concern about the impact of plastic pollution (particularly microplastics) on ocean ecosystems and human health[1].
