PhD in Historical Geography

Historical geography is an interdisciplinary field that combines elements of History, Geography, and Archaeology. It examines the ways in which historical events have shaped the physical landscape and (vice versa!). By the end of your PhD, you’ll complete an independent research project that should make a significant original contribution to the field.

What’s it like to do a PhD in Historical Geography?

Most of your time as a PhD student in Historical Geography will be spent conducting independent research, which will eventually culminate in your final dissertation.

You might study primary sources such as letters and government records to learn about the past, use geomorphological methods to examine how landscapes have changed over time, or work with archaeological samples and artifacts.

Possible research topics include:

  • Identity and heritage
  • Religion and religious landscapes
  • Conservation and management of natural landscapes
  • The impact of climate change of historical societies
  • The role of geography in the spread of disease
  • The development of trade routes

Alongside your research, you may be required to attend additional training and help with undergraduate teaching. You may also have the chance to present at academic conferences and publish your work in journals.

There are a small number of advertised projects available in Historical Geography, but most candidates will need to design their own project.

PhD in Historical Geography entry requirements

To apply for a PhD in Historical Geography, you’ll usually need a good upper-second class Bachelors degree in a relevant subject area. A Masters degree is sometimes required. It’s worth noting that applications are considered on a case-by-case basis and a postgraduate qualification will often be an advantage even if is not compulsory.

PhD in Historical Geography funding options

Depending on the focus of your project, PhDs in Historical Geography might be funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), the Economic and Social Research Council (ERSC) or the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).

Full studentships are very competitive, so many students will need to self-fund their PhD. There are numerous options for candidates taking this route, including the UK government’s doctoral loan, support from charities or trusts, and part-time employment.

PhD in Historical Geography careers

A PhD in Historical Geography will mean that you’re well qualified for a career in research, but graduates also pursue many non-academic roles in areas such as consultancy, local and national government, conservation and museum curation.
