Investigation and treatment of trabecular meshwork fibrosis using 3D glaucoma models.
  Dr L Hill
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Background. The development of safe and effective therapies to treat fibrosis is a major priority for patients with glaucoma. This ocular disease is characterised by elevated intraocular eye pressure (IOP), resulting from ineffective drainage of the aqueous humour.
Metabolic reprogramming in cancer: starving tumors of essential nutrients to promote cell death
  Dr S Papa
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

All the cells in our bodies are programmed to die. As they get older, our cells accumulate toxic molecules that make them sick. In response, they eventually break down and die, clearing the way for new, healthy cells to grow.
Harnessing inflammation to repair extracellular-matrix rich tissues
  Dr M Sherratt, Dr G Lopez-Castejon, Dr C Platt
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Inflammation is thought to play a key role in mediating many aspects of both age and disease. The aberrant expression of tissue proteases is a hallmark of inflammation.
In vitro models of type 1 diabetes.
  Prof E Stanley
Applications accepted all year round

PhD Type

Type 1 diabetes is a condition in which the immune system destroys the cells that produce insulin, the hormone controlling the level of glucose in the blood stream.
Inhibiting amyloid development using natural compounds: a molecular dynamics study
  Dr P Mulheran, Dr V A Ferro
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Amyloid fibrils are highly ordered protein aggregates associated with many neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Flavanoids, which are polyphenols such as curcumin present in the human diet, have been shown to inhibit fibril formation in tau protein which is abundant in neurons.
