Crowdsourcing Social Support: Using Virtual Reality to Examine the Effects of Self-Disclosure on Psychological Outcomes (Ref: SF20/PSY/BROWN)
  Dr G Brown
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Current social media technologies allow individuals unprecedented possibilities for sharing information about themselves to large groups, expanding connections and opportunities for social support, thus potentially improving mental health, but the Centre for Mental Health has stated that much remains unknown about how posting on social media influences young people’s well-being.
Self-organisation as a theory of brain development
Dr SP Wilson, Dr JV Stone
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Self-organisation is a general theory of how function is assigned to cortical microcircuits. The theory predicts that a balance between cooperative and competitive interactions in local cortical circuits, consolidated by Hebbian learning, results in similar inputs being represented by nearby neurons.
Adaptive Service Composition Techniques and Algorithms for Internet of Things (Self-Funded Students Only)
  Research Group: Complex Systems
  Prof O F Rana, Dr C Perera
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Service composition is a collection of services where, many smaller services are combined together to a larger service. Service composition is the problem of aggregating services in such a way that given (functional and not functional) requirements are satisfied.
Personal Data Store, Smart Cities Data Marketplaces, and Sensing as a Service for Internet of Things (Self-Funded Only)
  Research Group: Complex Systems
  Prof O F Rana, Dr C Perera
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

The Internet of Things envisions the creation of an environment where everyday objects (e.g., microwaves, fridges, cars, coffee machines) are connected to the Internet and make users’ lives more productive, efficient, and convenient.
Semantic Web Technologies and Linked Data for Internet of Things (Self-Funded Only)
  Research Group: Complex Systems
  Prof O F Rana, Dr C Perera
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

The ultimate goal of Semantic Web is to make the machine to understand the Internet data. To enable the encoding of semantics with the data, well-known technologies are RDF (Resource Description Framework) and OWL(Web Ontology Language).
Data analysis for digital-entrepreneurship/self-employment (Application Ref: SF19/EE/CIS/ANWAR)
Dr MN Anwar, Dr A Ali
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

This age of big data gives a great opportunity to turn large-size datasets with high-velocity and diverse structures into real advantage in many fields, such as health, economics, education and disaster prevention.
Computer Vision and Machine Learning for ReIdentification of Civil Structural Components and their Damage Analysis.
  Dr B Mandal
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

In this project the PhD research student needs to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the deep convolutional neural network for analysis of civil infrastructures, such as concrete bridges, highways, buildings, tunnels and stadiums, using videos/images captured by a network of multiple cameras.
The synthetic littermate project: How do natural experiences shape the functional organisation of the developing brain?
Dr SP Wilson, Prof AJ Prescott
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

How do natural experiences shape the functional organisation of the developing brain? To address this question directly, we have been developing a novel robotic technology - the synthetic littermate (or ’surrogate’).
Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Biomedical Data
  Prof P Andras
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are the leading edge approaches to data driven problems across all areas of life, technology and sciences.
Autonomous learning with Artificial Intelligence - (studied entirely by Distance Learning)
Dr A Starkey, Dr M Giannaccini
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Autonomous learning has become one of the latest buzzwords in today’s artificial intelligence and robotics. All the same, to realise the behaviour of even the simplest creature like a unicellular organism in an artificial agent remains extremely challenging with current artificial intelligence techniques.
