Iontophoresis to deliver corticosteroids across buccal mucosal using hydrogel as delivery systems
  Prof M Patel, Dr E Hagi-Pavli
Applications accepted all year round
Background. Topical delivery of drugs to treat oral mucosal disease is often challenging. This is due to, for example, the saliva washing therapeutic agents away into the gastrointestinal system, the movement of oral structures during mastication and the presence of keratinized oral mucosal surfaces.
Magnetic hyperthemia for cancer treatment: synthesis, biofunctionalisation of nanoparticles for thermo-chemotherapy
  Prof N T K Thanh
Application Deadline: 28 February 2019
Funded 3.5 years PhD. Open to UK nationals. Functional magnetic nanoparticles for cancer treatment. Supervisor. Prof Nguyen TK Thanh.
Efficient calculation of binding free-energies and druggability in challenging drug targets
  Prof F Gervasio
Application Deadline: 3 June 2019
This four year PhD research project, due to start in October 2019, is a collaboration between University College London and UCB pharma, a global biopharmaceutical company (www.ucb.com).
Computational modelling of protein dynamics in heart disease
  Dr A Fornili
Applications accepted all year round
Applications are invited from self-funded candidates interested in completing a PhD starting in October 2019 in the group of Dr Arianna Fornili (https://afornililab.wordpress.com) in the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences at Queen Mary University of London.
Novel assays for screening drug – lipid membrane interactions
Dr G Shearman, Prof R Singer
Applications accepted all year round
Small molecule therapeutics represent a major contributor to human health and wellbeing both in developed and developing economies.
Carbon nanotubes in the boron neutron capture therapy of cancer
  Dr G Calabrese
Applications accepted all year round
The early promise of boron neutron capture therapy as a method for the treatment of brain cancer has been mainly inhibited by the inherent toxicity associated with 10B-containing pharmacophores and the need for the ability to cross biological membranes.
Investigating the efficacy of novel antimicrobial mixes on microorganisms, surfaces and cells lines; an integrated study
Dr A Kelly, Dr S Schwikkard, Prof D Wertheim
Applications accepted all year round
The projection that within 50 years there will be more deaths from antimicrobial resistance than through cancer highlights the continual need for mining new and novel antimicrobials with activity against planktonic microbes and biofilms alike1.
Natural products as prophylaxis and treatment for gonococcal eye infections
  Dr L Snyder
Applications accepted all year round
Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria can infect the eyes of infants born to mothers infected with gonorrhoea, up to 80% of whom have no symptoms of their disease.
