Modelling lung deposition of inhaled particles in cystic fibrosis
Prof O Jensen, Dr A Horsley, Dr C Whitfield
Application Deadline: 9 September 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disorder that affects the production and clearance of mucus from various organs in the body. In the lungs this causes blockage and thickening of airways, leading to lung damage and early death from respiratory failure.
MRC DiMeN Doctoral Training Partnership: Magnetic resonance imaging of lung fibrosis in interstial lung disease – physics or engineering PhD project
Prof J Wild, Dr P Ford, Dr S Bianchi
Application Deadline: 6 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

In this project the student will work with the primary supervisor (Jim Wild, Professor of MRI physics [email protected]), clinical collaborators in Sheffield (Dr Steve Bianchi) and an industrial partner (Dr Paul Ford, Galapagos Pharmaceuticals) to develop quantitative magnetic resonance imaging methods for the assessment of lung fibrosis.
MRC DiMeN Doctoral Training Partnership: Understanding dysregulated repair in lung disease through precise laser injury and quantitative analysis of live cell behaviours in a human airway epithelial model
Dr C Ward, Dr R Tetley, Dr J Garnett
Application Deadline: 6 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Noncommunicable diseases, including chronic respiratory diseases, are responsible for 63% [36 million] of all deaths worldwide, making improved understanding and research an international priority.
The Role of Exosome-bound Proteases in Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome
Research Group: Centre for Experimental Medicine
Prof C Taggart, Dr S Weldon, Prof D McAuley
Application Deadline: 20 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

The release of proteases from cells is associated with lung damage and aberrant tissue remodeling. Prominent amongst these proteases is neutrophil elastase (NE) although elevated levels of other proteases has also been demonstrated in the diseased lung.
Gastroesophageal reflux in respiratory disease: pathogenic role and improved management
  Prof L Houghton
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) is associated with many lung diseases, including but not limited to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), non-IPF interstitial lung disease (ILD), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis (CF), non-CF bronchiectasis, asthma and idiopathic chronic cough.
Therapeutic targeting of chemokines in inflammation
  Prof S Bhattacharya
Application Deadline: 10 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Inflammation, driven by leucocytes, adversely affects organ function in diseases such as myocarditis, myocardial infarction, acute lung injury, sepsis and pancreatitis,.
