PhD in Medieval History

A PhD in Medieval History gives students the opportunity to study the rich and different period of the Medieval times. Seeking to understand the ideas, processes and events that shaped various peoples and continents, students will write up their findings in a unique dissertation.

What’s it like to do a PhD in Medieval History?

Throughout a Medieval History PhD, students will engage extensively with a variety of primary sources. Your resulting analysis should then be contextualised within the wider literature of your chosen field. While there are many topics of research to choose from, some popular historical themes include:

  • Archaeology
  • Conflict
  • Divinity and theology
  • Influence of local cities
  • Medieval literature
  • Medieval music
  • Movement and migration

Most PhD students of Medieval History will propose their own research project. There are a few advertised projects available each year but these are very limited. By the end of the degree you will have written up a 75,000 word thesis which is then assessed in an oral viva exam.

Throughout the degree there will be plenty of opportunities to develop you skills and engage with the wider academic community. Some common activities you may participate in include research trips, workshops, teaching undergraduates, presenting at conferences and publishing articles. Depending on your topic of study you may also have access to language courses.

Entry requirements

Most universities will ask that Medieval History applicants have a Masters degree in History or a related subject, such as Medieval Studies or Literature. Some universities may consider students without a postgraduate degree but they must be able to prove previous academic prowess and professional research experience. Make sure to speak with admissions if you are unsure about your eligibility.

PhD in Medieval History funding options

Most Medieval History PhDs are funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). They offer fully-funded studentships, covering tuition fees, a living stipend and necessary travel experience. You must have a confirmed place at a university to apply.

Many institutions also offer their own studentships so make sure to check out their funding opportunities on their websites.

As PhD funding is highly competitive there are many Medieval History students who self-fund. Usually through a mix of employment and the UK government doctoral loan, students are able to manage the financial pressures. There are also an array of short-term scholarships or grants offered by charities, trusts and national bodies which you can apply for throughout your degree.

PhD in Medieval History careers

A PhD in Medieval History helps develop the skills needed to work in a variety of fields. The most obvious route of progression would be to work in academia, teaching or research. However, Medieval History graduates may also be found working in heritage companies, libraries, publishing and policy.
