Can extreme internal waves trigger turbidity currents and carbon transport in submarine canyons? (HALL_UENV22ARIES)

Primary Supervisor - Dr Rob Hall. Secondary Supervisor - Dr Mike Clare (National Oceanography Centre, Ocean BioGeosciences). Supervisory Team - Dr Furu Mienis (Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, Department of Ocean Systems), Dr Dorothee Bakker (UEA, ENV). Read more

Probabilistic assessment of exposure to coastal hazards at nuclear power station development sites in the UK

Project Rationale. Nuclear power remains essential to the UK’s energy security and is seen by government as a cost-competitive, low carbon component of the UK’s current and future energy mix, with new nuclear power stations currently under construction along the coast, and more planned to replace aging reactors. Climate, water and society in arid regions: from ancient civilizations to the Anthropocene

The largest region of arid climate stretches from North Africa, across the Middle East and into Central Asia. In these regions, water availability is an important restriction and yet this is where the first cities, first kingdoms and first empires rose and fell. Read more

Understanding changes in temperature persistence under global warming

A fully-funded PhD studentship is available in the physics of climate change. The project will focus on changes in surface temperature “persistence” - or “memory” under climate change. Read more

Leaky Ocean Eddies (ZHAI_UENV22ARIES)

Scientific background. Mesoscale eddies are ubiquitous and most energetic features of the global ocean circulation. They play a key role in transporting and redistributing climatically important properties such as mass, heat, carbon and nutrients. Read more

Extreme weather in the tropics (MATTHEWS_UENV22ARIES)

Primary Supervisor - Professor Adrian Matthews. Secondary Supervisor - Dr Ben Webber (ENV, UEA). Supervisory Team - Dr Juliane Schwendike (School of Earth and Environment, University of Leeds. Read more

The role of stratosphere-troposphere coupling on North Atlantic air-sea interactions

Project Rationale. Lu et al. (2021) has developed a new index based on Ertel’s potential vorticity in the upper stratosphere. They show that the early winter conditions in the upper stratosphere play a key role in processing disturbances from the troposphere and then transmitting the signals back to the surface. Read more
