LaNts in wound repair, stem cell activation and squamous cell carcinoma
  Dr K Hamill
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

The Laminin N terminus proteins (LaNts) are a relatively unstudied protein family that are related to netrins and laminins. To date there are only two publications and one preprint about the LaNt proteins in the literature which means there is a massive potential to do novel, ground breaking research in this area.
RNAi workflows for crop protection by silencing virulence genes of fungi and oomycetes with antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs): Chemical modifications and conjugation to nanoparticles for enhancing ASOs silencing potential and delivery
  Dr L Bindschedler
Application Deadline: 10 February 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Major losses in crop production are caused by fungi and oomycetes. Traditional disease control involves either fungicide applications or via breeding of new plant varieties introgressed with resistance genes, or insertion of these genes in transgenic plants.
RVC PhD: Rebalancing mitochondrial metabolism in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy - a novel therapeutic avenue?
Dr C Thornton, Prof D Wells
Application Deadline: 9 February 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a fatal X-linked muscle wasting disease caused by mutations in the DMD gene that lead to the loss of a functional version of the subsarcolemmal protein dystrophin.
Reprogramming stomatal behaviour to reduce water use in crops
  Prof L Sweetlove, Prof R G Ratcliffe
Application Deadline: 24 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Future food security will depend on developing crop plants that are as efficient as possible in their utilisation of finite resources such as water.
The effect of anaesthetic neurotoxicity on the development of adult neural stem cells
Dr D Berg, Dr E Kang
Application Deadline: 13 March 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Although most neurons in the mammalian brain are generated during development, certain areas possess the capacity to generate new neurons throughout life.
Cellular cross-talk at the perivascular niche and the blood brain barrier
  Prof B Hogan
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Much research on vasculature has focussed on the endothelial cells that line functional vessels, however the milieu of cells that surround vessels (mural cells) play important and under-appreciated roles in homeostasis and disease.
QUADRAT DTP: Temperature regulation of crop - rhizosphere ecology
Dr J Dalzell, Dr C Gubry-Rangin, Dr FL Liu
Application Deadline: 22 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Crop plants manipulate rhizosphere interactions and community structure through the release of root exudates. Whilst root exudates can attract beneficial microbes, they are also exploited by pathogens and plant parasitic nematodes (PPNs).
Development of gene therapies for muscular dystrophies
  Dr L Popplewell
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

The activities in the Popplewell lab focus on the development of pre-clinical gene therapies for neuromuscular diseases, in particular muscular dystrophies based on gene replacement, endonuclease-mediated gene editing, antisense oligonucleotide (AO)-induced exon skipping and gene sliencing.
(BBSRC DTP) Understanding the role of RNA binding proteins in the regulation of NF-kappa B dynamics, inflammation and cell death
  Prof M White, Dr A P Gilmore, Prof S Griffiths-Jones, Dr M Muldoon
Application Deadline: 31 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

NF-kB is a key signalling system that controls inflammation and cell fate, dysregulation of which can lead to inflammatory disease or cancer.
Generation of transplant tissue following correction of patient stem cells by genomic engineering
Dr F Manson, Dr RL Taylor, Dr A Adamson
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

A number of retinal degenerations result from mutations in genes expressed in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) which lies under the photoreceptors.
Identifying the evolutionary origins of the MADS-box floral quartet mechanism in seedless vascular plants
  Dr A.R.G Plackett, Dr J C Coates
Application Deadline: 31 March 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Despite its commonplace occurrence in today’s environment, the reproduction of plants via flowers and seeds is a recent evolutionary innovation arising from an ancestral seedless reproductive system similar to that still found in a subset of today’s plants (e.g.
Understanding signalling networks underpinning key developmental processes during plant evolution
  Research Group: BBSRC MIBTP
  Dr J C Coates
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Plants first appeared on land almost half a billion years ago. All land plants likely evolved from a single aquatic green algal ancestor.
