Global warming, plankton functional diversity, and the biological ocean pump
Dr B Chen, Dr N Banas
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

We all know that global warming is a serious issue for the future of humankind and is intimately related with anthropogenic CO2 emissions.
Protecting our seas using computers - Modelling and forecasting the expansion of a highly invasive seaweed
Dr B Chen, Prof M Heath
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

This fully-funded 3.5 year studentship will remain open only until filled. We recommend applying immediately. In this project, you will meet with the challenge of developing an individual based model to simulate the growth and dispersal of a highly invasive seaweed (Japanese eelgrass) driven by coastal ocean currents.
Unlocking the Power of Data in the Shipping Industry
  Dr A Coraddu
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

For the Shipping Industry, the Information Age means the availability of ever-growing amount of data coming from multiple sensors present on-board.
Improved time-stepping schemes in weather and climate models
Prof P Williams, Dr H Weller
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

"The task of predicting weather and climate may be reduced to the following iterative procedure. First, given the state of the system at any time (the input), use the governing equations to compute the state at a slightly later time (the output).
Design Optimisation of Energy Saving Technologies for Energy Efficient Ships
Dr Y Demirel, Dr W Shi, Prof M Atlar
Application Deadline: 30 July 2019

Funding Type

PhD Type

Shipping has been, and still is, one of the most important methods of transport, with more reliance and importance now being placed on this mode of transport as a consequence of advances in shipping technology and the ability of ships to store and transport increasing capacities of goods.
Modelling wave-induced sea ice breakup on small and large scales
  Dr F Montiel
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Sea ice is a key component of the climate system, which is experiencing significant changes as a consequence of global warming. The rapidly decreasing sea ice extent in the Arctic Ocean means solar radiations are increasingly being absorbed into the ocean, causing further melting and weakening of the sea ice cover.
