Operational Research PhD Projects, Programmes & Scholarships for European Students (exc UK)

We have 31 Operational Research PhD Projects, Programmes & Scholarships for European Students (exc UK)

Operational Research involves the application of mathematical methods to solve a problem at hand. If you’re thinking of doing a PhD in Operational Research, you’ll be working on solving numerical versions of problems in sectors like healthcare, public health, finance and transportation among many others.

What’s it like to do a PhD in Operational Research?

A PhD in Operational Research will require you to put to use scientific methods and study complex organisational problems and use your existing knowledge of mathematical models to help in decision-making.

Most Operational Research PhD topics have a large mathematical component. Some of the most popular topics in Operational Research are:

  • Mathematical optimisation
  • Queuing systems
  • Healthcare modelling
  • Environmental modelling
  • Data analytics
  • Finance and risk

By the end of your PhD, you’ll have produced an in-depth thesis that makes a unique and significant contribution to your field of study. You will have to submit a final thesis of about 80,000 words to be defended in a oral viva examination to complete your PhD.

Operational Research doctoral programmes are sometimes offered with a research objective attached. However, some universities might also ask you to propose your own research idea as part of your application.

In the UK, most Operational Research PhD students first register to an MPhil. You can upgrade to a PhD, after a review at the end of your first year, if your supervisor feels your work meets certain standards.

Entry requirements

Most Operational Research PhDs require you to have a strong mathematical background so a honours degree and a Masters degree in a relevant subject is often necessary.

Depending on where you apply, you might also have to give a language test showing you are fluent in the language of instruction at your university.

PhD in Operational Research funding options

In the UK, a PhD in Operational Research is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). They offer fully funded studentships along with a monthly stipend. If you are applying for an advertised PhD with the funding attached, you’ll get the funding if you’re successful in your application. However, if you are proposing your own research project, you’ll have to first be accepted by a university and then apply for funding separately.

PhD in Operational Research careers

A PhD will equip you with the skills required to excel in academia. Most Operational Research students work as postdoctoral research fellows, research impact officers or lecturers. You could also work for governments or financial firms.

Integrated operational planning using Smart Energy Demand Management in maritime ports

Applications are invited for a fully-funded three-year PhD to commence in October 2024. . The PhD will be based in the Faculty of Business and Law, and will be supervised by Dr Jana Ries, Dr Negar Akbari and Dr Becky Canning. . Read more

Post-Disaster Debris Clearance Planning under Uncertainty (Ref: RDF24/BL/MOS/CAVDAROGLU)

In disaster management literature, there exist plenty of studies that aim to efficiently and effectively plan the activities required for the restoration of critical infrastructure networks after a disaster (e.g., Gomez et al., 2019; González et al., 2016; Sharkey et al., 2015; Cavdaroglu et al., 2013; Nurre et al., 2012). Bayesian Modelling the Spatial-Temporal Evolution of Natural Hazards

Summary. You will develop a new Bayesian framework for forecasting the occurrence and evolution of natural hazards by adapting a cutting edge spatio-temporal modelling package, originally developed for ecological systems. Read more

ACS-05-Punzo - Diffusion of sustainable technologies in multiplex networks: theory and experiments

We are looking for a PhD student to join an interdisciplinary project that will use theoretical models, simulations and incentivized economic experiments to study the diffusion of sustainable technologies and behaviours and the policies that can facilitate it. Read more

Improving adverse event reporting in rehabilitation trials for people with Multiple Sclerosis

Background. It is essential to assess harms as well as benefits of investigational treatments to provide a robust evidence base. This is underlined by recent updated CONSORT guidelines for the reporting of harms [1]. Read more

Design and analysis of programmes of cluster-randomised trials: Master protocols for implementation laboratories

Background to the project. Implementation science studies ways of promoting the systematic uptake of research findings, and other evidence-based practices, into routine clinical practice [1], thereby reducing research waste and maximising efficiency [2]. Read more

Developing randomisation guidance and resources for implementing optimal constrained 2-armed trial designs

Background to the project. The majority of confirmatory clinical trials take the form of two-arm randomised comparisons of an investigational intervention to a control (e.g., standard of care or placebo), or a randomised controlled trial (RCT). Read more

Operationally feasible Multi-Arm-Bandit Response Adaptive Trials

Background to the project. Response Adaptive trials, such as those based on multi-armed bandit models, have the potential to improve efficiency of clinical trials - by reducing the required sample size or increasing the chances of an experiment success. Read more
