PhD Studentship Nanophotonic-enhanced optical technologies for imaging in biomedicine
  Ms M Tamagna
Application Deadline: 30 November 2019

Funding Type

PhD Type

About us. The VISIONLab at the University of Cambridge develops novel imaging approaches for early cancer detection and evaluation of disease prognosis.
Hollow Core Fibres in emerging applications
Dr R Slavik, Prof D Richardson
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

We are looking for candidates with an interest in fibre opitcs and a degree or masters’ degree in physics or electronics to join us in researching novel optical fibres (hollow core fibres) manufactured in our Cleanroom complex for use in emerging applications (such as 5G networks, latency-sensitive communications, etc.) in collaboration with our recently-formed spin-off company, Lumenisity.
Ultra-stable fibre optics using new-generation optical fibres
Dr R Slavik, Dr F Poletti, Dr E Numkam Fokoua, Prof D Richardson
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

We are looking for a candidate with an interest in fibre optics and a degree or masters’ degree in physics or electronics to join us in researching the applications of brand new hollow core optical fibres developed at the University of Southampton (see ‘Further information’ below).
  Quantum simulations with Bose-Einstein Condensates
  Dr G Barontini
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

We use modern techniques of laser cooling and magnetic and optical trapping to reach the lowest temperatures in the universe – just a few billionths of a degree above absolute zero – in very dilute atomic samples.
Simulation of quantum transport with cold atoms
  Dr V Boyer
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Quantum mechanics is believed to play a role in certain natural processes such as light harvesting. For example certain bacteria are capable of capturing the energy of an incoming photon and transporting the resulting excitation to the reaction centre with great efficiency.
  Ultracold single-atom quantum engines
  Dr G Barontini
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

The technological progress is pushing towards the realization of smaller scale devices and, at the ultimate level, machines will be built only with one or a few atoms.
Novel Camera Technology for Imaging of Cell Collectives - Start date: 1st October 2019
  Prof D Faccio
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

The University of Glasgow (UofG) is home to world-leading research in the fields of imaging and computing science. UofG is also home to the UK Hub for Quantum Imaging Technologies, QuantIC (https://quantic.ac.uk/) who are co-funding this PhD research project in collaboration with a Horiba.
Improving the sensitivity of gravitational-wave detectors
  Research Group: Gravitational Physics
Dr K Dooley, Prof H Grote
Application Deadline: 10 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Since the start of their first observing runs in fall 2015, Advanced LIGO and Virgo have made direct detections of gravitational waves created by the collisions of black holes and of neutron stars, thus bringing to life a new instrument for astronomy.
Quantum Optics of Giant Rydberg Excitons in Cuprous Oxide
Research Group: Condensed Matter and Photonics
  Prof W W Langbein, Dr S Lynch
Application Deadline: 13 December 2019

Funding Type

PhD Type

Cuprous oxide (Cu2O) is one the oldest, and yet least well-known, semiconductor material. It has a slightly larger band gap than silicon, which means that the single crystal form of the material is slightly transparent in the visible part of the spectrum.
MRC DiMeN Doctoral Training Partnership: Investigating Cognitive Correlates of Circuit dysfunctions in Autism Spectrum Disorders
Dr A Banerjee, Prof C Petkov
Application Deadline: 6 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a group of early postnatal developmental disabilities with executive dysfunction as a key co-morbid feature.
