EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Next Generation Synthesis & Reaction Technology (rEaCt) - 13 Studentship Projects Available

Funding Type

PhD Type

Applications are invited for 13 4-year MRes/Ph.D. EPSRC CDT rEaCt studentship projects – Cohort 2 (Intake October 2020). At least 13 studentships available - click here to view project summaries.
Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Natural Sciences
  Prof P Friederich
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

The recently founded AIMat group at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is searching for motivated students with a above-average Masters degree in computer science or (computational) natural sciences.
Development of low molecular weight organogelators
  Dr J Bear
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Low Molecular Weight Organogelators (LMWOs) are small molecules, which are able to gel organic species through intermolecular supra-assembly.[1-4] This property makes them very useful for oil spill remediation and clean-up, as you can apply the LMWO to floating oil slicks; gel the oil and scoop it out of the water.
Diffusion Ordered Spectroscopy NMR for the Rapid Identification of Medicinal Plants
Dr JM Peron, Dr A Le Gresley
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Diffusion Ordered Spectroscopy (DOSY) is a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique that is used to analyse mixtures.[1–3] Put simply, NMR signals that overlap in 1D NMR spectra are separated in 2D DOSY spectra according to molecular size and those that belong to the same component align as they are governed by the same diffusion coefficient.
Magnetic-polymer hydrogels for controlled drug release
Dr A Perera, Dr N Hill, Prof M Fielder
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

This dynamic, multidisciplinary project involves developing a facile technique to fabricate polymer hydrogels incorporated with Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) for controlled drug delivery applications.
Synthesis and Anti-Cancer Evaluation of New Heterocyclic Quinones
Prof F Aldabbagh, Dr N Hill
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

The group has published on small molecules with specificity towards hypoxic cells associated with solid tumours, reductase enzymes over-expressed in cancer, as well as, aziridines that induce hypersensitivity from Fanconi anaemia cells and those carrying mutations in the BRCA (Breast Cancer Susceptibility) genes.
Synthesis and Properties of Novel thermoresponsive polymers for water purification
Dr S Barton, Dr J Barker
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Water is one of the basic necessities required for the sustenance and continuation of life. It is therefore important that supply of good quality water should be available for various activities.
Synthesis of a toolbox of bioisosteric building blocks for drug discovery
  Dr S Wren
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

This project involves the preparation of important building blocks that feature bioisosteres (for application in various medicinal chemistry contexts).
Discovery of small molecules with bactericidal antomycobacterial activity against MDR strains
Prof A Malkov, Dr G Weaver
Application Deadline: 1 October 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Based on the structure of marine natural products showing some anti-tubercular (bacteriostatic) activity, we identified small molecules that exhibit bactericidal activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and other pathogens.
PhD Studentship: Detection of peroxynitrite using a reactive luminescent lanthanide probe
  Dr S Butler
Application Deadline: 22 August 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Application details. Reference number. CM/SJB-Un1/2020. Start date of studentship. 1st October 2020. Closing date of advert. 22th August 2020.
Activating Carbon Dioxide Utilising Atmospheric Pressure Gas Plasma
Dr B Buckley, Dr F Iza
Application Deadline: 31 July 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

This project will be part of the Doctoral Training Centre on Plasma interactions with Liquids. The Buckley group has embarked on a programme of research directed at carbon dioxide utilisation (CDU) and has reported initial efforts in the area.
Activation of Carbon Dioxide to the synthesis of Biologically Relevant Molecules
  Dr B Buckley
Application Deadline: 31 July 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

This project will look at the selective modification of compounds to deliver new/non-natural amino acids/peptides. The approach will use a new carboxylation process developed in our group.
Novel Cyclic Peptides for Biomedical Imaging and Therapeutic Targeting
  Prof M Zanda
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Cyclic Peptides have a wide range of applications as drugs and diagnostics, and have often higher receptor affinity, metabolic stability and better pharmacokinetic properties compared to their linear counterparts, but their synthesis still presents significant challenges.
Synthesis of Lamellarin alkaloids using a photoredox initiated cyclisation cascade
  Dr M Kimber
Application Deadline: 31 July 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Our research group focuses on the synthesis of heterocycles, particularly using singlet oxygen and activation of enamides and allenamides.
Advanced manufacturing processes to enable the heterogeneous integration of power electronics - Ref: CL1UF2018
  Prof C Liu
Application Deadline: 3 May 2020

Funding Type
