QUADRAT DTP: Co-evolution of Earth and Life: are land plants good for coral reefs?
Dr A Brasier, Dr J Sigwart
Application Deadline: 22 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

For the first four billion years of its history, the Earth was a fundamentally different planet to that which we know today. the only green covering on land (if any) was provided by mats of microbes.
QUADRAT DTP: Current and past ecology of dynamic seasonal salt lakes and their responses to climate change
Dr V Louca, Dr H Roe
Application Deadline: 22 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

The eastern Mediterranean region has been experiencing the most severe, long-term drought as a percentage reduction in rainfall, than any other region in the world and climate models predict this to continue.
QUADRAT DTP: Exploring the potential of multi-tissue sulphur and strontium isotope analysis and isoscape modelling to reconstruct past faunal movements
Dr K Britton, Dr N Ogle
Application Deadline: 22 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

The reconstruction of the lifetime movements of archaeological animals can provide us with unique perspectives on past human societies and – when involving wild species – can also provide valuable insights into ancient ecosystems.
Dinoflagellate cysts and palaeoenvironmental change during Cretaceous oceanic anoxic events: a study of OAE1a
Prof I Jarvis, Prof G Gillmore
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

This project will study Cretaceous dinoflagellate cysts. It seeks to understand relationships between dinocysts, a proxy for marine nutrient availability and organic zooplankton fertility, and episodes of black shale (petroleum source rock) deposition during Oceanic Anoxic Events (OAEs) in the mid-Cretaceous.
ONE Planet DTP - Using eDNA and stable isotopes in lake sediment cores to inform wetland conservation by examining causes of decline of rare water bird species. (OP20279)
  Mr M Van Hardenbroek
Application Deadline: 31 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

The UK was once home to a number of now locally extinct water bird species such as the white stork (Ciconia ciconia), Dalmatian pelican (Pelecanus crispu) and night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax).
ONE Planet DTP - Palaeoenvironmental investigation into the origin of the domesticated landscapes of southwestern Amazonia (Ref: OP202026)
  Dr B Whitney
Application Deadline: 31 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Contrary to popular conceptions, the Amazon was not a pristine landscape prior to European arrival, but contained large human populations that created complex landscape management systems for the production of food and industrial crops.
ONE Planet DTP - Reconstructing climate and ancient landscapes in the Maya Mountains, Belize, using tropical land snails (Ref: OP20318)
  Dr O Kwiecien
Application Deadline: 31 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Project Description. A range of palaeoclimate records document Holocene climate change in the ancient Maya region. The extent to which these changes influenced the ancient Maya civilisation is hotly debated.
The development and evolution of Caribbean coral reef islands (Advert Reference: RDF20/EE/GES/EAST)
  Dr H East
Application Deadline: 24 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Coral reef islands are low-lying (. In order to improve predictions of how reef islands may respond to future environmental change, it is important to understand how they have responded to past environmental changes, including in sea level.
Evolution Education Trust PhD project - Morphological phylogenetics of living and fossil arthropods: how can we make it better?
  Prof M A Wills
Application Deadline: 5 February 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

The University of Bath is inviting applications for this PhD opportunity based at the Milner Centre for Evolution, a unique, cross-faculty research centre bridging biology, health and education.
Drivers of marine ecosystem change during an ancient abrupt global warming event
Dr K Edgar, Dr R Butler
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

The Palaeocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) ~56 million years ago, is the largest of a series of abrupt global warming events known from the Cenozoic.
The experimental effects of wave processes on arthropod taphonomy: implications for Lagerstätten and Small Carbonaceous Fossils
Dr S Mitchell, Dr A Butcher, Dr N Minter
Application Deadline: 23 February 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Applications are invited for a fully-funded three-year PhD to commence in October 2020. The PhD will be based in the Faculty of Science and Health, and will be supervised by Dr Nicholas Minter, Dr Steve Mitchell and Dr Anthony Butcher.
