Rare decay physics with B baryons and mesons at LHCb
  Prof Nigel Watson
Application Deadline: 1 March 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Physics of rare B baryon and meson decays, and charmless decays of B mesons using data from the LHCb experiment at CERN. The project will also involve contributing to the group’s technical responsibility (GEANT4 detector simulation) within LHCb, and possibly to our commitments to the LHCb upgrade.
Higgs boson production in association with top quarks using the ATLAS detector at the LHC
  Prof P Teixeira-Dias
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

The long-established RHUL ATLAS group is renowned for its expertise in physics (Higgs, top quark and exotic signatures of new physics), statistical methods as well as trigger and data acquisition systems.
Measurements of top quark cross-section using the ATLAS detector at the LHC
  Prof V Boisvert
Applications accepted all year round

Development of high performance calorimetry for future collider experiments
  Prof Nigel Watson
Application Deadline: 1 March 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Future collider experiments require much higher performance calorimetry than we can build at present.
Adaptation of 3 GHz cavity design of linear accelerators for proton radiotherapy
Dr R Apsimon, Dr H Owen, Dr G Burt
Application Deadline: 31 March 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

A studentship is available from October 2020 on the development of high-gradient radiofrequency linear accelerators proton therapy.
Properties of Rare-Earth Elements and Their Application to Free-Electron Lasers
Dr H Owen, Dr B Shepherd
Application Deadline: 31 March 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

A studentship is available from October 2020 on the design of magnetic arrays for future free-electron lasers. Previous work by our group indicates that certain rare-earth metals can support large magnetic fields and therefore can be used in the construction of high-field magnets for use in particle accelerators.
