Fractured cities, arts and everyday life in a post-conflict context
  Dr I Kutznetsova
Application Deadline: 30 December 2018
Applicants are invited to work on revealing the role of visual and/or performing arts in cities and after violent conflict through the prism of the resistance and tactics of subjugated groups and the strategies of those with power.
Web archives and cities: mining the web to learn our cities
Dr E Tranos, Prof J Grieve
Application Deadline: 22 January 2019
This project will explore how the dynamics of cities are reflected in and, therefore, can be sensed by mining online content. Not only cities change, but they also change faster than the secondary data update pace.
Validating Cenozoic records of deep-sea ostracod diversity
  Dr I Boomer
Applications accepted all year round
Ostracods are microscopic, bivalved crustaceans that have a long fossil record in marine and non-marine habitats. The existence of deep-sea ostracod assemblages in today’s oceans have been known since the 19th century Challenger expedition.
Total Atmospheric Emissions from the Biosphere
  Dr W J Bloss, Dr L Kramer
Applications accepted all year round
The dominant source of hydrocarbons to the atmosphere is vegetation – biogenic volatile organic compounds or BVOCs. In the atmosphere, BVOCs undergo chemical processing, leading to the formation of secondary pollutants such as ozone and organic aerosol particles, affecting human and environmental health and climate.
The evolution of volcanism following sector collapse
  Dr S Watt, Prof T J Reston
Application Deadline: 21 January 2019
Sector collapses are among the largest volume events to affect volcanic systems, potentially involving the rapid displacement of tens of cubic kilometres of rock.
The Stratigraphy and Emplacement of the Antrim Lavas (SEAL)
  Dr C T Stevenson, Dr S Watt
Application Deadline: 21 January 2019
Basaltic traps and related intrusions, globally, host a variety of resources including aggregates (Mitchel, 2015), minerals (Lusty, 2017), geothermal (Campbell et al., 2016), and groundwater (Seneger et al., 2015; Babar and Muley, 2018).
Tree mortality and drought: leveraging the power of big data
Dr T Pugh, Dr J P Sadler, Dr T Matthews
Application Deadline: 21 January 2019
Why do trees die? How do the rates and drivers of tree mortality vary from the tropical rainforest to the boreal? How do these mortality rates affect forest structure? These questions are crucial in order to understand large-scale forest dynamics.
Modelling temporal changes in biodiversity as a function of land-use change in Indonesia
Dr T Matthews, Dr J P Sadler, Dr T Pugh, Dr NE Barrand
Application Deadline: 21 January 2019
The reported impacts of forest loss and land-use change are almost universally negative, and habitat loss more generally is argued to be the biggest driver of the current extinction crisis (Sala et al., 2000; Haddad et al., 2015).
Unravelling the process of subduction initiation: style, mechanism, and timing
  Dr M Maffione, Dr C T Stevenson
Application Deadline: 21 January 2019
Subduction is a key step in the solid Earth cycle that allows tectonic plates to move.
Correlative microscopic analysis of uptake, localisation and transformations of nanoscale particles in freshwater foodwebs
Dr I Lynch, Prof S Krause
Application Deadline: 21 January 2019
The potential for human exposure to manufactured nanoparticles (NPs) has increased in recent years, in part through their incorporation into a wide range of commercial goods and medical applications.
