  Dr M Perry
Application Deadline: 11 January 2019
Project summary. This project seeks to understand the challenges, impacts and responses to a global problem – plastic pollution – by using a comparative approach in Scotland and Uganda.
LKAS PhD Project: Innovation in Community Models of ‘Housing with Care’.
  Prof D Clark
Application Deadline: 11 January 2019
Project summary. Ageing is often depicted as a burden for society, but there is now a growing realisation that it also provides many opportunities for economic growth and innovation in housing, care and co-production.
Developing Multi-Modal Neuroimaging Biomarkers for the Detection of Early-Stage Psychosis
  Dr P Uhlhaas, Prof R Murray-Smith
Application Deadline: 11 January 2019
The project will develop new predictive algorithms for mental health outcomes in young people at high-risk for Schizophrenia (ScZ) that will synthesize expertise from cognitive neuroimaging, clinical psychology and data-analytics.
NANO Materials in Space - Determining the factors that influence metallic silver, or gold and other nanocluster nanoparticle synthesis, their shape and polydispersity
Dr M Yaseen, Prof A Hursthouse
Application Deadline: 10 May 2019
At UWS, we are passionate about our research that focuses on resolving societally critical problems and to address some of those we have established a partnership with the International Space School Educational Trust (ISSET).
PhD in Engineering: Headspace metabolomics for non-invasive biomarker discovery
Dr C Gauchotte-Lindsay, Dr E Combet Aspray, Prof G Ramage
Application Deadline: 11 January 2019
Recent developments in advanced mass spectrometry and data treatment tools has led to a boom in the efficient design of point-of-care testing (POCT).

Dr H Heidari, Dr J Riddell, Dr A Vuckovic, Dr C Stasinakis
Application Deadline: 11 January 2019
Project Summary. This PhD project will address the issue related to capturing the magnetic field from skeletal muscles by bringing about a novel, robust and efficient technique based on Magnetomyography (MMG).
Minimising adverse effects of conservation: Ecological consequences of restoration of salmon carcasses to upland streams (Ref IAP2-18-31)
  Prof N Metcalfe
Application Deadline: 18 January 2019
Salmon populations are declining and in need of active conservation measures, but how is their freshwater habitat best managed to maximise their survival? The juveniles live in uplands streams that would previously have contained many adult salmon that would have died after spawning, so releasing nutrients into an otherwise nutrient-poor environment.
