We have 65 Immunology (self) PhD Research Projects

Self-funded BMS project: Resurrecting ancestral human sugars: a novel approach to cancer immunotherapy

Human cell surfaces are coated in a thick layer of sticky sugars [Glycocalyx]. Uniquely, cancer cells are covered with an excess of a sialic acid sugar (Neu5Ac), acting as ‘camouflage’ to avoid the immune system. Read more

Self-funded BMS project: Cytokine-dependent immune cell modulation through trained immunity

Your innate immune system is the first line of defence against infections, cancer and various physiological danger signals. Innate immune dysregulation is a central driver of various pathologies ranging from neurological diseases to immunological and metabolic disorders and cancers. Read more

Self-funded BMS project: Normal and malignant blood stem cell biology

One of the simplest and most provocative concepts in all of stem cell biology is how a single stem cell can give rise to any of the highly specialised cell types of a given tissue while also having the capacity to make a new equally potent stem cell. Read more

Self-funded BMS project: Ion channel signalling in cancer cells

Our cells constantly sense and transport ions present in their environment. From embryonic development to epilepsy to heart disease to cancer, our cells’ ability to respond to changes in the ionic microenvironment is essential for healthy ageing. Read more

Self-funded BMS project: Helminth-induced changes to host haematopoiesis – a permanent problem?

More than a quarter of the global population is infected with a parasitic worm that causes a range of diseases. On-going work in our laboratories is focused on understanding how parasites such as schistosomes cause wide-ranging changes to host bone marrow and re-programme mammalian haematopoiesis. Read more

SELF-FUNDING MSc BY RESEARCH PROJECT: Underlying mechanism of thrombogenesis in patients with severe coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19)

Severe coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) is a disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2). Patients with COVID-19 are at significantly increased risk of thrombosis, which can be a challenge to manage and is associated with elevated mortality and morbidity. Read more

The role of UV exposure and novel compounds on the immunogenicity and genotoxicity of skin cancer

  Research Group: Chemistry and Biosciences
The major aims of this project are to investigate the effect of UV in the development of different skin cancers compared to spontaneously regressing precancerous lesion, keratoacanthoma; and the effect of a novel compounds such as the structurally modified retinoic acid in the treatment of skin cancers and other cutaneous lesions. Investigating epitranscriptomics

The funded PhD position is available at the Central European Institute of Technology – Masaryk University (CEITEC MU) in Brno, Czech Republic. PhD position is available in ongoing project in the group of RNA and Immunity run by Mary O’Connell and Liam Keegan. Read more

Antibiotic resistance and biofilm formation in the WHO priority pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii

The McCarthy Lab at Brunel University London is excited to offer a fully funded PhD studentship to study how Acinetobacter baumannii can survive exposure to antibiotics and form a biofilm. Read more

Neuroinflammation in Alzheimer’s disease: what is the role of amyloid-beta fibril structure?

This project will explore the role of amyloid-beta fibril structure in triggering neuroinflammation in Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia and affects millions worldwide. Read more
