15 doctoral student positions in the biomedical MSCA
Innovative Training Network “Thrombo-Inflammation in
Cardiovascular Disease” (TICARDIO)
TICARDIO seeks 15 biomedical doctoral students of academic excellence
Applications open: March 22, 2019
Application deadline: July 15, 2019
TICARDIO - an international, interdisciplinary joint doctoral degree program, as part of the
Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks within Horizon 2020 - will train the
next generation of biomedical researchers in excellent laboratories of major multidisciplinary
research hubs at the Center for Thrombosis and Hemostasis (CTH) of the Johannes
Gutenberg-University Medical Center Mainz (Germany), the School for Cardiovascular
Diseases (CARIM) of Maastricht University (Netherlands), the Center for Cardiovascular and
Nutrition Research (C2VN) at Aix-Marseille Université in Marseille (France), and the LeibnizInstitut für Analytische Wissenschaften – ISAS - e.V. in Dortmund (Germany).
European Joint Doctorate Program
Fifteen fully-funded PhD students will start their project between June and October 2019.
PhD degrees will be issued jointly by two University partners, this will require doctoral
students to split their time between institutions and be mobile across the network. This
involves a 6-12 months stay at a second institution plus a 2-3 month secondment at a nonacademic partner organization. Doctoral students will participate in network-wide TICARDIO
training activities and conferences, and local graduate school training.
Research
TICARDIO's program is designed to discover and validate new interactions in the crosstalk
between vasculature- and blood-driven inflammatory and prothrombotic processes, and to
identify diagnostic biomarkers and potential targets of intervention. The scientific projects are
intertwined and require scientists with diversified skills to exploit a broad range of new
techniques in imaging, flow cytometry, proteomics with high-throughput protein profiling,
multiplex microfluidic assays, and various coagulation assays. These techniques are applied
to in vitro and in vivo studies, using the newest experimental models of thrombosis and
inflammation. Providing these diverging techniques lays beyond the possibilities of a single
institute, but will be essential to decipher the complex deregulated interactions in blood and
vessel wall, causing thrombo-inflammation.

Funding
Each position is fully funded for 3 years, including salary with national social security
contributions, research consumables and conference travel. No tuition or bench fees apply.
Eligibility
- Candidates must hold a Master degree (or equivalent) in the biomedical sciences or a
similar field.
- Innovative Training Networks are limited to researchers who, at the time of recruitment,
are in the first four years of their research careers and have not been awarded a
doctoral degree.
- Strict mobility rule: At the time of recruitment, researchers must not have resided or
carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their recruiting
institution for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date.
Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into
account.
