2021 University of Canberra PhD Scholarships (Translational Health Research), Faculty of Health

The University of Canberra Faculty of Health PhD Scholarship Scheme aims to attract the brightest people who will be health leaders of the future. Students will use research to answer industry-relevant questions and issues that have impact on practice and policy.

Emphasis is given to research translation and impact into changes in practice and policy.

PhD scholars will be recruited into the following strategic research areas;

Place and health

Spatial epidemiology and prevention research, particularly the prevention of non-communicable disease and understanding the biological pathways between social and physical environments and important population health outcomes and costs.

Wellbeing and quality of life in rural, regional and urban areas

Examining wellbeing and quality of life in Australia's rural, regional and urban areas to improve quality of life of people living in different communities across Australia.

Programme evaluation and impact

Assessment of context and implementation in complex population and community health interventions. Mixed-method evaluation approaches e.g. realist and novel social science research methods to large-scale social epidemiological and multi-level evaluation studies.

The scholarship only covers the living costs, no fees will be paid for international students and preference will be given to domestic applicants i.e. Australian citizens.

The Scheme provides 3 years of funding (full-time) for the candidate to complete a PhD by publication.

The University of Canberra has undergone significant transformation over the past 10 years and has continued to rise rapidly in the international rankings. The University is ranked number 34 in the 2019 Times Higher Education (THE) Young University Rankings and puts the University of Canberra among the world’s top 40 young universities. The University of Canberra is also ranked number 193 in the 2020 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings, placing the University in the top 2 per cent of universities in the world.

Successful candidates will enrol into our flagship PhD programmes and be integrated into high performing academic teams in world class environments.

PhD candidates will be awarded a scholarship stipend of $28,000 per annum (2019 rate, indexed), comprising a tax-free living allowance for 3 years. Please note that international fees are NOT included.

As an embedded component of their research degree, each student will have the opportunity to spend part of their candidature with an industry or local government partner applying knowledge and developing ‘real-world’ skills.

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must:

  • meet the University of Canberra’s admission requirements;
  • meet residency requirements;
  • not be currently enrolled in a PhD program at another university at the time of application;
  • apply as a full-time candidate;
  • be nominated by a UC approved supervisory team;
  • have obtained the equivalent of a Master’s degree by research or 1st Class honours degree.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who have peer reviewed publications.

Successful candidates must be located on the UC campus.

Application Process for the PhD Scholarship

  1. Prospective applicants should identify a UC PhD project and supervisory team with which they would like to be involved.
  2. Prospective applicants should submit a 1 page expression of interest (EOI) to the supervisory team via the email below and provide information on their research experience and qualifications.
  3. If a prospective applicant's experience and skills match the supervisory team expectations, the applicant will be contacted to discuss the project and the subsequent steps to take.
  4. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to submit a full application, which should be done in consultation with the supervisory team.
  5. Applicants must only use the UC online application system to complete their formal application and upload the application form.
  6. Applications will be assessed by the Research Committee and ranked, and scholarship allocations made.
