3 PhD positions (f/m/d)

Pay grade: 13 TV-L / 65% - temporary employment)

Starting September 1, 2022

The CRU 337 PhenoTImE at the University Hospital Essen and University Duisburg-Essen is based on a unique consortium of internationally renowned basic and clinician scientists with a shared research focus in innovative cancer therapies and tumor-immune crosstalk. Our overall goal is to comprehensively study the molecular mechanisms controlling phenotypic plasticity and immune escape in a distinct assembly of cancers (melanoma, pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, glioblastoma) and to reciprocally test our findings across the different cancer entities.

We offer outstanding scientific training and research opportunities for graduates of life sciences with interest in basic and translational cancer research. The exciting research projects comprise epigenetic and metabolic processes inside tumor cells, the reciprocal interaction with microenvironmental parameters, with a focus on the immune system, and the respective effects on tumor cell identities and immune escape. The results will be integrated in comprehensive bioinformatic analyses of genetically and transcriptionally profiled samples as well as publicly available datasets, always in a clinicopathological context.

The promising candidates will be part of a dedicated interdisciplinary team that aims to open new treatment avenues and strategies to prevent drug resistance in cancer.

The following institutes, involved in the CRU, are searching:

  • Division of Translational Skin Cancer Research, German Cancer Consortium (DKTK), University of Duisburg-Essen
  • Division of Translational Neurooncology, West German Cancer Centre, German Cancer Consortium (DKTK), University Hospital Essen
  • Department of Medical Oncology, Laboratory of Molecular Tumorpathology, West German Cancer Center, University Hospital Essen

  • Completed Diploma or Master degree in natural sciences in the field of either Medical Sciences, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Bioinformatics, or equivalent disciplines
  • Initial experience with bioinformatics analysis of high throughput analyses
  • First experience in molecular and cell biology techniques and interest in working with patient-derived as well as in vivo model systems
  • Experience with cell culture methods
  • Initial experience with animal experimentation
  • Candidates should be fluent in spoken and written English; knowledge of German is not a requirement.
  • Candidates should have very good computer skills
