SeNSS is offering student-led funded studentships for the 2019/20 academic year, in 13 social science disciplines across 10 universities with exceptional reputations for doctoral training and research:

Over 35 SeNSS ESRC-Funded Studentships Available

Studentships are available as a +3 (PhD) or 4-year (Masters and PhD) awards, as well as on a full- or part-time basis.

Fully-funded SeNSS studentships include:

  • Tuition fees (UK/EU rates)
  • Maintenance stipend at RCUK rates (currently £14,777 p.a., tax free)
  • London weighting: £2,000 p.a. (London-based SeNSS universities only)
  • Research training support grants
  • Access to further research funding

Academic eligibility

For funding for a Masters followed by a PhD:

  • qualifications or professional experience equivalent to a first or upper second class honours degree, or an equivalent combination of qualifications and/or experience are required

    For PhD funding:

  • qualifications or professional experience equivalent to a Masters degree with distinction or merit, or an equivalent combination of qualifications and/or experience are required

Residential eligibility

Fully funded studentships are ONLY to Home or EU students who meet the UKRI eligibility criteria. For a full award (fees + stipend), you must:

  • Have settled in the UK with no restrictions on length of stay
  • Have been a UK ‘ordinary resident’ for three years prior to 30 September 2019
  • Not have been residing in the UK wholly or mainly for the purpose of full-time education (not applicable to UK/ EU nationals)

The only exception is that international students may apply to the Economics Pathway and, if successful, may receive a full award.

EU students who have not been resident in the UK for 3 years prior to 30 September 2019 may be eligible for a fees-only award if they are ‘ordinarily resident’ in an EU member state.

How to apply

  1. Check your academic and residential eligibility
  2. If you are eligible, decide which SeNSS university you’d like to attend and which supervisor you want to work with (spend some time researching this)
  3. Apply directly to that University by 20 January 2019 and follow their processes and deadlines for SeNSS funding applications
