4-Year Funded PhD Studentships in Pure and Applied Mathematics

The School of Mathematics at UEA is offering 4-year EPSRC funded PhD studentships in various areas of pure and applied mathematics.

Potential supervisors are:

  • David Aspero (set theory, forcing), d.aspero@uea.ac.uk
  • Mark Blyth (fluid dynamics, mathematical modelling), m.blyth@uea.ac.uk
  • Mark Cooker (fluid impact, fluid dynamics), m.cooker@uea.ac.uk
  • Vanessa Miemietz (representation theory, categorification), v.miemietz@uea.ac.uk
  • Emilian Parau (nonlinear water waves, hydroelastic waves), e.parau@uea.ac.uk
  • Davide Proment (quantum fluids, nonlinear physics), d.proment@uea.ac.uk
  • Richard Purvis (violent fluid dynamics and splashing, mathematical modelling), r.purvis@uea.ac.uk
  • David Stevens (ocean modelling, climate modelling), d.stevens@uea.ac.uk
  • Shaun Stevens (representation theory, number theory), shaun.stevens@uea.ac.uk

In order to apply for the studentships, please first get in touch with one of the potential supervisors listed above to discuss and agree a project with them.

The PhD Studentships will start in the academic year 2020-21 .

Funding

Funding is for 4 years and will be available to successful candidates who meet the UK Research Council eligibility criteria. These requirements are detailed in the Research Council Training Grant Guide which can be found at www.ukri.org/files/legacy/publications/rcuk-training-grant-guide-pdf/ (see Annex 1 for Residential Guidelines for Research Council Studentships). To enable universities to support the very best students, there is limited relaxation of student residence eligibility requirements each year. The EPSRC allows the University of East Anglia to offer up to 50% of the new DTP studentships in Mathematical Sciences this year with open eligibility. Successful candidates will be eligible for a full award.

Entry requirements

Applications are invited from suitably qualified graduates. Candidates should hold, or expect to hold, a relevant undergraduate (at least 2:1) degree. Candidates who have studied outside of the UK should typically hold, or expect to hold, qualifications at an equivalent level to those mentioned above. Candidates will be interviewed, usually via Skype, as part of the selection process. EU applicants may be required to provide evidence of competence in the English Language. In your application you should indicate your prospective supervisor with whom you have agreed a project. Where the application form asks for a research proposal, please enter the project description you have agreed with the supervisor, as well as a statement explaining your motivation and suitability for this research.

Please contact the Postgraduate Research Director Dr Vanessa Miemietz (v.miemietz@uea.ac.uk) with any queries.
