BBSRC supported BARIToNE Collaborative Training Partnership (CTP) PhD programme

BBSRC supported BARIToNE Collaborative Training Partnership (CTP) PhD programme

We are BARIToNE, a Collaborative Training Partnership (CTP) bringing together academic expertise and industrial opportunities.

The Barley Supply chain has come together to form the International Barley Hub (IBH) in order to collaboratively drive research priorities that will impact the sustainability of barley production over the course of this cent. Our lead academic is University of Dundee, recognised as a “global centre of excellence for Life Sciences & Medicine” in the newly released QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022. Our lead industrial partner is the Scotch Whisky Research Institute, the industry's Research & Technology Organisation from 1974, delivering innovation and scientific support to the industry for over 40 years.

We are a multi-partner academic and industry-led PhD programme, including world-renowned scientists from the University of Dundee, Nottingham, and the James Hutton Institute, as well as from 18 industrial partners such as DIAGEO, Glenmorangie, and US-based ABInBEV.

Our BARIToNE doctoral students will train to become the next generation of scientists at the forefront of international barley science. This is possible due to the scientific excellence available across our academic and industrial partners, together with a genuine commitment to develop the personal and transferable skills of each of our students.

Once you become a BARIToNE doctoral student, you will join our supportive and positive research cultures with the opportunity to select collaborative research projects centred around three main themes:

  1. Climate resilience
  2. Reducing inputs
  3. Healthy soils

Please see individual project descriptions for more details on each of our projects as well as for information on the supervisory team and primary location.

We particularly encourage students from groups that are currently underrepresented in postgraduate science research, including black and minority ethnic (BME) students and those from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
