He is co-lead author of a ground-breaking research paper, alongside Professor John McGeehan. Now Harry is characterising the new enzyme, so it can be engineered. He explains, “The aim is to get it to work faster and last longer. This research gives the potential to make any plastic 100 per cent recyclable.”

Serena's story

Civil Engineering PhD student, Serena Cunsulo is one of a number of engineers from across the UK all working on exciting projects that make a positive difference to the world. She was part of the Ocean Cleanup team, which is providing vital evidence about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP), located halfway between Hawaii and California and the largest accumulation zone for ocean plastics on Earth. She is now looking at how plastics can be prevented from entering our rivers and oceans.
