The Li Ka Sing Faculty of Medicine invites applications from high caliber students for research studies (for the degrees of Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy) in three rounds of admission exercises each year.

Multi-disciplinary research in a wide spectrum of clinical and basic sciences research areas including aging, biomedical engineering, cancer, development & reproduction, drug, genomics, infection & immunology, neurosciences, public health, stem cell & regenerative medicine, cardio-metabolic diseases, etc.

With a strong research base, the Faculty has made tremendous contributions to the study and treatment of various diseases. The high quality work that our researchers produce and publish has resulted in 53 of them being listed among the top 1% of scientists in their fields (ISI Essential Science Indicators).

As the longest established institution in higher education and the top university of Hong Kong (THE 2018, QS 2018 & ARWU 2017), our students work within the Faculty’s state-of-the-art research facilities and amongst a network of over 500 full-time teaching staff, 600 research staff and 660 research postgraduate students.

Opportunities Available

The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship (HKPF) is a prestigious award established by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC) for recruitment of the best and brightest students of any country of origin and ethnic background to pursue PhD study in Hong Kong's institutions.

Awardees will be provided with a stipend of HK $301,200 (~US $38,600) and travel allowance of
HK $12,600 (~US $1,600) per year to a maximum period of three years.

HKPF awardees will also be entitled to

  • the Faculty's Doctoral Entrance Scholarship for Medical Research Excellence of HK $40,000 (~US $5,100) in their first year of study;
  • a guaranteed hall place for their first year of study with possibility of renewal in the second year; and
  • for awardees who are non-local full-time students, the composition fees of HK $42,100
    (~US $5,400) will be waived for their first year of study.

Postgraduate Scholarships (PGS): HK $199,920 (~US $25,500) per year, offered to eligible full-time MPhil/PhD candidates.

Tuition Waiver Scheme: Composition fees of HK $42,100 (~US $5,400) per year will be waived for all local full-time MPhil/PhD candidates.

University Postgraduate Fellowships (UPF): HK $70,000 (~US $9,000), offered to selected full-time PhD candidates with excellent academic record on top of the Postgraduate Scholarships.
