British Heart Foundation Centre of Research Excellence 3-year Interdisciplinary PhD Studentship

British Heart Foundation Centre of Research Excellence 3-year Interdisciplinary PhD Studentship

Call for Applications for 3 PhD studentships with King’s College London commencing October 2020

The King’s College London British Heart Foundation (BHF) Centre of Research Excellence offers an outstanding environment for cardiovascular research training. It includes many internationally rated investigators whose expertise encompasses a broad range of cardiac and vascular biomedicine. The Centre of Excellence compliments the School of Cardiovascular Medicine & Sciences at King’s, which ranked very well in the REF2014 submission for Clinical Medicine (UoA 1) - 1st in terms of the proportion of outputs rated at 4* or 3*.

Projects

British Heart Foundation Centre of Research Excellence 3-year Interdisciplinary PhD Studentship

We currently have 3 studentships available within the King’s BHF Centre of Research Excellence to commence in October 2020.

Professor Cathy Shanahan – ‘The role of tissue and cellular stiffening in maladaptive vascular smooth muscle cell phenotypic change’

(Project reference: BHF/CS/01)

Stiffening of the cardiovascular system during ageing is associated with a number of detrimental pathologies including hypertension and heart failure. Using an interdisciplinary approach combining cell biology with advanced microscopy (AFM, super-resolution) this project will investigate the interplay between extracellular vesicle release, cellular senescence and matrix stiffening.

Dr Alkystis Phinikaridou – ‘Understanding the role of cardiac fibrosis in the development and treatment of heart failure using novel molecular imaging probes and novel therapeutics’

(Project reference: BHF/AP/02)

This unique and multidisciplinary project combines molecular imaging and molecular biology to reveal the role of cardiac fibrosis in heart failure.

We will develop and use state-of-the art molecular MRI tools and novel biological therapies to diagnose, predict and prevent the development of heart failure.

Professor Mauro Giacca – ‘Exploring the correlation between metabolic control, cardiac remodelling and cardiac regeneration in vivo using CRISPR activation technologies’

(Project reference: BHF/MG/03)

A talented and enthusiastic PhD student is sought for a highly innovative project aimed at exploring the regulation of cardiomyocyte proliferation and hypertrophy by metabolic pathways.

In particular, the student will apply state-of-the-art gene editing technologies to activate or inactivated selected metabolic genes in the heart of transgenic mice to explore the relevance of metabolic reprogramming in cardiac regeneration after myocardial infarction and cardiac remodelling after pressure overload.

Eligibility

Applicants must possess, or be expected to achieve, a 1st or good upper 2nd class degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject. A 2:2 degree may be considered only where applicants also offer a Master’s degree with Merit or above.

Funding

Studentships cover tuition fees at the Home/EU rate plus offer a stipend at BHF rates (currently starting at £22,278 pa) for all three years. Exceptional candidates who qualify as International Students will be considered, if in possession of documented support to cover the tuition fee differential (currently ca £18,000 pa).

Enquiries

Please contact the relevant supervisors or the BHF Centre manager (silvia.pedroni@kcl.ac.uk) if you have questions about the research projects.

For further information and guidelines on how to apply please visit our website or go to King’s Apply to apply direct.

The closing date for completed applications is Sunday 15 March 2020. Interviews are expected to be held in April.
