Our MSc by Research in Regenerative Medicine and Tissue is a one-year, full-time, on-campus Masters programme structured around two laboratory-based research projects. It prepares you for a career in academia or industry, whether you have recently completed an undergraduate degree or are a professional wanting to pursue a career in research.
The programme teaches key principles in stem cell biology, developmental biology, regenerative medicine, inflammation research and tissue repair. You will become a well-rounded researcher, learning practical research, data interpretation and presentation skills.
The programme is based at the Centre for Regenerative Medicine (CRM), a purpose-built research centre with a track record of training more than 200 postgraduate students. Edinburgh Medical School performs world-class biomedical research, and CRM is a global leader in regenerative medicine and clinical translation.
The University of Edinburgh is a world-leading research university, placed 20th in the 2021 QS World University Ranking. Edinburgh is a vibrant, historic capital city, regularly voted as one of the most desirable places to live in the world.
You will undertake two 20-week research projects, which you will choose from a list of projects submitted by group leaders, based around their current research. Many labs are involved in collaborative projects that provide cross-disciplinary experience and/or promote translation into the biotechnology or clinical fields.
The projects provide you with practical experience of a range of research techniques in cellular and molecular biology and genetics relevant to tissue regeneration and repair. The projects will teach you good research practice, scientific writing and analytical skills.
Seminars by experts in stem cell biology, developmental biology, regenerative medicine, inflammation research and tissue repair complement the programme, providing breadth and depth to your training. Through participation in discussion groups you will learn critical appraisal and manuscript reviewing skills.
In consultation with your supervisor you will develop your second research project and write this as a grant application before starting your research. This will teach you project design and planning, and allows you to develop your academic writing skills further. Importantly, it permits you to take ownership of your second research project from the start.
The programme delivers skilled researchers uniquely equipped to capitalise on regenerative medicine’s potential to advance human health.
Graduates from our programme are well-placed to successfully pursue a PhD in biomedicine or take on challenging professional roles in academia or healthcare industries along with gaining valuable transferable skills.
'It speaks volumes of the quality of this programme that so many of us who wanted to, were able to find PhD positions.' - Ingrid Tsang
