Cambridge School of Biological Sciences PhD Studentships

1. School of Biological Sciences (SBS) DTP PhD Studentships

We are offering up to 14 fully funded SBS DTP PhD studentships commencing in October 2022, details here.

Participating departments / institutes: Babraham Institute; Department of Biochemistry; Gurdon Institute; Department of Pathology; Department of Pharmacology; Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience; Department of Plant Sciences; the Sainsbury Laboratory; Department of Zoology.

The Award: A stipend for 4 years at the UKRI level (£15,609 in 2021); university fees at the home rate; research consumables for 4 years (£18,000 in total). In addition, you will also undertake a 3-month long Professional Internship for PhD students (PIPS) at some stage during your study, and will participate in training and cohort-building events alongside other BBSRC DTP and SBS DTP funded students.

Widening Participation at the University of Cambridge: At least two of our 2022 School of Biological Sciences (SBS) DTP 4-year funded PhD studentships will be reserved for candidates from underrepresented groups.

2. Alexander Crummell PhD Scholarships 2022 – for students with black or black-mixed ethnicity

In collaboration with Queens’ College, Cambridge, the School of Biological Sciences is inviting applications for the Alexander Crummell PhD Scholarships, details here.

Participating departments / institutes: All departments and institutes within the School of Biological Sciences, details here.

Eligibility: These scholarships are aimed at UK-domiciled students with Black or Black-Mixed ethnicity, applying for a PhD degree in a science-based subject at the University of Cambridge. The terms of the award include that you will become a member of Queens’ College, Cambridge.

The Award: Students in receipt of the Alexander Crummell PhD Scholarship will join the School of Biological Sciences SBS (DTP) PhD programme and receive the same award benefits as other SBS DTP PhD students (details above).

How to apply: You should first approach a potential supervisor – who will help you identify a research project – before applying. Potential supervisors are listed under the following 6 Research Themes on the Research Themes tab of the Postgraduate School of Life Sciences Website and include the following:

  1. Reproduction, Development and Lifelong Health
  2. Organisms, Evolution and Ecology (including Plant Biology)
  3. Functional and Evolutionary Genomics
  4. Infection and Immunity
  5. Neuroscience, Psychology and Behaviour
  6. Molecules and Cells
