Cancer Research UK City of London Centre PhD in children and young people’s cancer 2024

The Cancer Research UK City of London (CoL) Centre is a world class hub for cancer biotherapeutics. The Centre brings together world leading cancer researchers from across four London institutions: the Francis Crick Institute, UCL, Barts Cancer Institute/ Queen Mary University of London and King’s College London. This unique interdisciplinary and collaborative network aims to develop new biological therapies and enhancing the impact of therapy by combining biotherapeutics with targeted small molecule approaches and image-guided physical therapies.

Cancer in children and young people is different to cancer in adults, from the types of cancer to the impacts of treatment. Researchers across the Centre are working to overcome the challenges this brings to develop new therapies specifically for young patients.

We are looking for highly motivated graduates with a background in biomedical, biological or related sciences, who have a keen interested in carrying out research in cancer biotherapeutics in children and young people’s (CYP) cancer. We offer a number of PhD projects spanning the Centre’s research portfolio. This position is funded by Cancer Research UK and Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity.

You will be part of an exciting academic environment underpinned by world-class technical expertise. The integrated PhD programme brings together diverse cohorts of students and clinical fellows. It offers bespoke, high quality scientific & transferable skills training, harnessing the breadth and depth of resources and knowledge across the Centre. During your PhD you will undertake multi-disciplinary training, cross-institutional research placements and cohort-building activities.

Studentships are sponsored fully for 4 years commencing September 2024. You will receive a non-taxable annual stipend of £23,000 per annum. Funding covers tuition fees for Home status only. Applicants must have obtained, or be about to obtain, a First or Upper Second Class UK Honours degree, or the equivalent qualifications gained outside the UK, in an area appropriate to the skills requirements of the Centre.
