Project title: Centre for Doctoral Training in Chemistry for a Sustainable and Healthy Society

Applications are invited for PhD Studentships within the Department of Chemistry to start in October 2021.

The Studentship is funded for 4 years, on a starting bursary at the standard research council rate, which is presently £17,027 per annum including London Allowance, and cover the full cost of Home tuition fees. Income tax is not payable on the stipend.

Eligibility

This scheme only covers funding for Home/EU students.

Programme Description

We are delighted to announce the launch of the Centre for Doctoral Training in Chemistry for a Sustainable and Healthy Society at King’s College London. This ambitious programme beginning in 2021 will produce graduates who have expertise in Chemistry but whose experience transcends traditional boundaries, so they become conversant in the languages of Biology and/or Physics. This is in line with the strengths of KCL Chemistry where we carry out state of the art research at the interfaces of chemistry and the life and physical sciences. We believe that major global questions such as climate change, sustainable energy production, antimicrobial resistance and emerging pathogens can only be solved by harnessing interdisciplinary research and state of the art techniques such as synthetic biology, synthetic chemistry, single molecule techniques and molecular modelling. This CDT aims to train outstanding chemists who are comfortable in multidisciplinary settings, can work in diverse teams to solve complex problems and will be agile enough to apply their knowledge to future scientific challenges. Student profile

Prospective candidates should have a 1st or 2:1 M-level qualification in Chemistry, or a related subject.

Candidates should be able to demonstrate an aptitude for multidisciplinary research, the ability to work collaboratively in a diverse research environment as will a track-record of problem-solving and independence.

Teaching

We expect that the successful candidate will want to contribute to our department's teaching, for which payment will be made separately. The opportunity to contribute as a teaching assistant during the PhD programme will help students develop skills which will be relevant when they look for future roles. Training and mentoring in teaching and learning in higher education will be provided, and the successful applicant will be expected to attend the Faculty’s Preparing to Teach course should they undertake additional teaching duties. Successful applicants will also have the opportunity to complete the Teaching Recognition at King’s programme (TRaK) which is the King’s route to achieve Higher Education Academy (HEA) professional recognition.
