Data science is an exciting new inter-disciplinary field in which to work and do research. It is driving almost every area of science, engineering and commerce. We offer our students the opportunity to develop deep technical expertise, and then apply their knowledge to problems in application areas for which they have a passion.
The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Cloud Computing was first established in 2014, since then it has recruited five excellent cohorts of students. Our graduates have gone on to exciting careers in industry, academia, and the National Innovation Centre for Data. The future of the CDT is supported by investment from Newcastle University and its industrial partners.
Through our industrial partners, we identify real world challenges. Our students address these challenges through industrial placements and applied academic collaboration.
Our cohort based, 4-year scheme offers a tailored PhD training and research programme, with opportunities to:
We combine knowledge from Computing Science and Maths and Statistics to offer a unique student experience. Based within the award-winning Urban Sciences Building we are uniquely placed to give you access to an advanced skillset and prepare you for leadership in a rapidly developing field.
We are not currently accepting applications to the programme.
To be considered for admission to this programme, students must have (or expect to get) at least a II(i) Honors Degree (or equivalent) in computing science, mathematics, statistics or another strongly quantitative discipline.
We will also consider applicants on an individual basis with lower or non-standard qualifications if they have relevant professional experience in computing or statistics and a strong interest in the other.
We have up to 10 studentships for UK and EU domiciled students. This will cover the costs of fees and an annual tax-free stipend of £15,009 for 4 years.
There is also significant funding for equipment, research costs, and local, national and international travel (e.g. conferences and placements).
We have capacity to train up to 20 doctoral students each year.
