Clinical research training fellowship EPSRC-SFI Centre for Doctoral Training in Engineered Tissues for Discovery, Industry and Medicine (LifETIME)

EPSRC-SFI Centre for Doctoral Training in Engineered Tissues for Discovery, Industry and Medicine (LifETIME)

Clinical research training fellowship - position available within the LifETIME CDT for session 2020.

The CDT in Engineered Tissues for Discovery, Industry and Medicine is a partnership between the University of Glasgow, University of Birmingham, Aston University and National University of Ireland Galway. The CDT will train the next generation of interdisciplinary (engineering, chemistry, physics, maths and biology) leaders in developing in vitro tissues, sensing and diagnostics to develop humanised in vitro systems to drive better drug screening.

Global challenge

There are major problems with current drug discovery:

  1. Genomic and high-throughput technologies are driving the volume of new drug leads, but despite this volume, the number of successes has remained static; there is a productivity crisis.
  2. Overly simple in vitro screens and non-human animal models are not predicting fails and so approximately 40% of new drug fails are discovered during human trials.

The LifETIME CDT thus focuses on development of non-animal technologies to improve predictive power of pre-clinical drug screens and thus drive medicines discovery. For more information and details of the LifETIME programme please visit our website.

Funding and eligibility

Clinical research training fellowships are available at the UK/EU rate.

A clinical salary needs to be sourced and agreed with your employer. We will fund PhD registration fees at the UK/EU rate, provided a generous consumables/travel budget and cover all training costs.

To be eligible for a clinical research training fellowship you must be a UK citizen or an EU national who has been resident in the UK for the past three years.

Applicants must be a clinician, including (but not limited to) medics, surgeons, dentists, clinical psychologists, public health specialty trainees, allied health professionals, nurses, midwives and veterinarians, to undertake the PhD.

PhD Project

The programme offers the opportunity to create a bespoke PhD in collaboration with our academic supervisors and stakeholder partners.

The CDT combines physical sciences, clinical science and engineering with biomedicine to break down the boundaries between these disciplines.

The proposed research projects must address one of the Centre’s four key-themes challenges:

  • Cell and Tissue Engineering
  • Cell Sensing and Cell Testing
  • Drug Discovery
  • Translation and Manufacturing

Equality, diversity and inclusion

LifETIME places equality, diversity and inclusion at the heart of its activities, offering part-time studentships, funding to support applications from under-represented backgrounds, childcare support for conference attendance, flexible working for carers as well as prompting a work-life balance.

How to apply

In the first instance please contact the CDT directly (lifetime-cdt@glasgow.ac.uk) with your project proposal or to request details of potential supervisors within the CDT that you can work with to create a project.

Applications must then be submitted through the University of Glasgow online application system for session 2020/21. You will be required to submit a cover letter, CV, two references and your transcript/degree certificate.

Deadline

30th April 2020.
