Coventry University International Cotutelle PhD Programmes

Coventry University offers PhD candidates an unparalleled international experience, working alongside world-class researchers through cotutelle PhD programmes at Deakin University, Australia; University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, China, Stellenbosch University, South Africa and a selected network of other partners worldwide. As a result candidates gain unique exposure to different cultural and scientific environments, substantially increasing employability after graduation.

What is a Cotutelle Programme and what are the benefits?

A cotutelle is a PhD programme where a PhD candidate is jointly enrolled at two universities, spending time at each university (time will vary depending on the programme and discipline). Candidates are jointly supervised by academic staff at each institution and, upon successful completion of the PhD programme, able to graduate with a PhD or equivalent title from each university. The cotutelle programme is a fantastic way to gain wide-ranging research experience within different academic environments, through joint enrolment and research supervision.

Cotutelle PhD candidates benefit from being part of an exceptional international research team, receiving high-quality supervision from both universities. They are also part of a prestigious network of global academic staff and research candidates, creating a vibrant international research community.

The breadth of international engagement allows access to a significant programme of seminars and conferences. The combined offer provides access to unique international dissemination opportunities and research networking, supporting future career development.

As a cotutelle PhD candidate you will have access to additional funding opportunities, the widest possible research development opportunities, and the latest research equipment and technologies at both institutions, providing a truly world-class research experience.

Where will I be based?

This will vary depending on the cotutelle programme itself, but typically, you will spend between 2 and 12 months at each institution. You will commence your programme at the home institution and the timing of the exchange will be tailored to best suit the project.

What Supervisory support will be available?

A team of supervisors from both institutions will jointly supervise you throughout your programme. Regular meetings and communication ensure that the team stays engaged with you, and wherever you are located, there will be supervisory and skills development support readily available.

How will progress be assessed?

Each institution has its own programme requirements, including relevant development programmes, covering research methodology and academic writing.

You will be provided with a tailored programme meeting the requirements of both institutions. Care has been taken to develop these to ensure that wherever possible, assessed work meets the requirements of both institutions.

How will I be examined for my PhD Award?

PhD candidates will submit their thesis to their host University and undergo a single defence through an agreed viva voce examination. Successful candidates will receive an award from each institution, based on their respective requirements and will be eligible to attend graduation at both universities.
