It was established in 1875 by the Jesuit Society, and its headquarters are located in the heart of Beirut, Lebanon. USJ provides students and faculty members with important resources and special services for research purposes. Libraries, laboratories and research centers are available on all its campuses. Schools for Doctoral studies have been created to encourage, follow up, and contribute to the training of PhD candidates, providing them with the necessary support within the framework of a coherent project within and across all institutions.

Doctoral schools contribute to the visibility of doctoral training, particularly in the context of cooperation with foreign higher education institutions or research centers, through the promotion of international convention of dissertations, in collaboration with the Vice-Rectorate for Research (VRR), the Vice-Rectorate for Academic Affairs (VRAA) and the Vice-Rectorate for International Relations (VRRI).

The following is offered to PhD candidates:

  • The necessary support within a coherent research project;
  • Scientific supervision provided by quality research units or teams;
  • Useful training for the conduct of their research project;
  • A space of exchange and reflection.

An ethics center guarantees and safeguards the conditions under which research and dissertations are prepared at the University.

Generally, admission to the doctoral cycle, or third cycle, is conditioned by obtaining a Graduate Degree (i.e., a Master’s) in the same chosen discipline. This requirement is combined with the choice of a dissertation* subject, the presence of a supervisor, and the payment of the tuition fees. Should the Graduate Studies degree vary from the discipline targeted for Post-Graduate Studies, the candidate’s file is submitted to the Equivalency Committee of the University for Evaluation.

* The dissertation can be written in English, French or Arabic.
