Diversity100 PhD Studentships

Birkbeck is offering 5 fully funded Diversity100 studentships for doctoral studies beginning in the 2020/21 academic year. These studentships actively address under-representation at the highest level of research, and encourage Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) applicants to consider academic research in all disciplines. Successful candidates will have a strong academic background and/or exceptional research potential.

About Birkbeck

Birkbeck is a research-intensive university based in central London and our vibrant and intellectually challenging research environment is built upon 200 years of research excellence. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework assessment (REF 2014) Birkbeck was ranked 30th nationally for research excellence and intensity with 73% of our research rated 'world leading’ or 'internationally excellent'. Our doctoral researchers make up a community of over 700 postgraduate research students.

Value of the award

These new studentships will offer financial support to Home fees BAME PhD students.

The studentships cover all tuition fees (£4,407 a year for 2020-21) and provide a tax-free stipend for living expenses at UK Research Council rate (£17,285 a year for 2020-21) for up to three years full time or five years part time.

Eligibility criteria

These Diversity100 studentships are for new students beginning their PhD studies in the forthcoming 2020/21 academic year which begins in Autumn 2020. Candidates must qualify for Home fees. No candidate can take up the award unless they are also offered a place on the relevant doctoral programme.

These studentships are available to BAME PhD applicants only. The following ethnic groups are considered as BAME:

  • Arab
  • Asian – Bangladeshi
  • Asian – Chinese
  • Asian - Indian
  • Asian - Other
  • Asian - Pakistani
  • Black - African
  • Black - Caribbean
  • Black - Other
  • Gypsy or Traveller
  • Mixed - White/Black Caribbean
  • Mixed - White/Black African
  • Mixed - White and Asian
  • Mixed – Other
  • Other - Any other Black or Minority Ethnic Group

The closing date for applications is midnight on Monday 11 May, 2020. Applicants must:

  • Submit a PhD programme application
  • Submit a 250 word abstract of their research proposal
