EMERALD: 15 fully funded (3.5 years) PhD positions for Medical Doctors in the International PhD Programme

EMERALD, the first European-wide PhD programme for Medical Doctors (MDs), co-funded by the prestigious Marie-Sklodowska Curie Actions (MSCA) and coordinated by the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) in Barcelona, has launched its 2nd call for applications with the aim of recruiting 15 Fellows to work on a PhD in 8 top biomedical institutes across Europe: BRIC(Copenhagen), CRG (Barcelona), NKI (Amsterdam), IGC (Lisbon), MDC (Berlin), VIB (Flanders), IC (Paris), and IDIBAPS (Barcelona).

The recruited MDs will acquire unique scientific, technical, and digital skills and knowledge to advance their careers at the frontier of medicine and research, with the final goal to improve patient care and tackle global health challenges.

EMERALD will recruit MDs of any nationality, gender, culture, religion, sexual orientation, or age to undertake a PhD in biomedical or life science research. To be eligible for an EMERALD fellowship, applicants must:

  • Education:Hold a medical degree degree which allows them to enrol in an official Doctoral programme following the national regulations and institutional requirements in force at each host institute.
  • Mobility: Candidates must undertake trans-national mobility according to the H2020 MSCA rules. During the 3 years before the date of the call deadline, they must nothave resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) for more than 12 months in the country of the selected recruiting centre for which they apply.
  • Years of research experience: At the date of the call deadline, candidates must be in the first 4 years of their research career and have not been awarded a PhD degree.
  • Language: English at an excellent level.

THE POSITIONS

The fellows will enrol in the PhD programme at the host institute, benefiting from competitive salaries, an international and creative environment, advanced training, and access to high-end technologies and facilities.

A unique feature of the EMERALD training programme is that we combine training and mentoring: entailing an online training platform, in-person summer schools on the latest technologies, and peer-to-peer and mentee-mentor activities.

SELECTION PROCESS

The selection process will be merit-based and includes 5 steps of evaluation: Eligibility check, remote evaluation by external experts, online panel interviews with the selection committee, host-interviews with the potential host research group(s) and final selection.
