The Blizard Institute is the largest institute of Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, part of Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). We are a world-class biomedical research institution, integrating basic science, clinical research and translational research activity within a unique and award-winning facility.
We are home to more than 120 postgraduate research students, looked after by an excellent supervision and monitoring infrastructure, ensuring that you are given all the support you need to pursue your research.
All PhD students participate in transferable skills training to help you prepare for the challenges of the job market. You will attend a wealth of symposia, seminars, lectures and talks held at the Blizard Institute and across the university. Our Blizard Institute student forums include social events, networking, help with research issues and career events.
In addition, the QMUL Doctoral College provides a number of events and activities of its own, tailored specifically to PhD students. This includes a University wide induction for all new students, training days, and an annual Graduate Festival all designed to further develop your research skills, foster conversations and collaborations between our research students and staff, and promote a cohesive and supportive PhD community.
Our award winning Blizard building provides state of the art laboratory and office accommodation based on an innovative open plan design. The building hosts core facilities for:
The open plan arrangement maximises the mixing of research groups involved in ‘wet lab’ research and promotes the development of interdisciplinary projects.
The Institute is organised into five research and education centres: Cell Biology and Cutaneous Research; Genomics and Child Health; Immunobiology; Neuroscience, Surgery and Trauma; and Primary Care and Public Health. The five centres work across shared research themes, with a sixth centre, the Centre of the Cell, focussing on public engagement. The Centre of the Cell is the first science education centre in the world to be located within working biomedical research laboratories. It is an online resource, a science and health education centre and an outreach project. Our students have the opportunity to train and work as STEM Ambassadors with the Centre of the Cell. This award-winning project is just one of the many ways that you can get involved in STEM, public engagement and widening participation activities.

We are based in London, at Queen Mary’s Whitechapel campus. Our location, next to The Royal London Hospital, and strong links with Barts and The London NHS trust help us create research collaborations that address the health needs of our local ethnically-diverse population.
As part of Barts and The London Medical School the Blizard Institute was ranked within the top five in the country in REF 2014. Staff returned in both Clinical Medicine (UoA1) and Health Services (UoA2), 90% of outputs in clinical medicine and 80% in health services judged world-leading/internationally excellent.
