The UK is committed to the use of offshore wind energy to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The Aura CDT enables delivery of this target by developing environmental and engineering solutions to key OSW sector challenges, supporting a sustainable future.

Supportive research environment

The Aura CDT is led by the Energy and Environment Institute at the University of Hull with partner universities Durham, Newcastle and Sheffield. It integrates the core strengths of each institution in environment, engineering and energy and also works closely with over 20 international industry partners. Students have both an academic supervisor and an industry link, giving access to world-leading research and development facilities in both environments.

Impactful research with strong industry links

Your research could make a real impact to the environmental and engineering challenges facing the offshore wind industry. All research is developed to meet industry need and we also offer Industry Scholarships, where the research proposal is predefined by a supervising industry partner. We are currently offering an Industry Partner Scholarship with the ORE Catapult, the UK’s leading technology innovation and research centre in offshore renewable energy.

Industry focused research with ORE Catapult

Whilst offshore wind developments to-date have predominately been constructed in well-mixed unstratified coastal waters, growth of the offshore wind sector now requires the first ever large-scale industrialisation of stratified shelf seas. New understanding of turbulent mixing in stratified flow past infrastructure is required to aid both future design and to quantify environmental impact, from single turbine to array scale. The successful applicant will address these critical research questions using state-of-the-art computational fluid dynamics with the support of specialists at the University of Hull and industry partners, ORE Catapult.

Funding and eligibility

Aura CDT scholarships cover fees plus a stipend set at UKRI nationally agreed rates, circa £15,609 pa for full-time students (subject to progression). Click for eligibility information.

Part-time students are welcomed from the UK only due to Tier 4 visa requirements.
