EPSRC Bristol Centre for Functional Nanomaterials

Bristol Centre for Functional Nanomaterials

The Bristol Centre for Functional Nanomaterials (BCFN) is now recruiting for 2018 entry to our 4-year programme. This innovative interdisciplinary research training programme offers the opportunity to undertake a PhD in the fundamental understanding of, and application of functional nanomaterials to societal challenges, including energy, health, or emerging technologies. Our research draws on expertise and skills across Physics, Chemistry, Engineering and the Biosciences and we welcome applications from suitably qualified candidates from any of these disciplines.

Scientific exploration and interdisciplinary training are central to your experience as a PhD student studying with us at BCFN. You will be working with other outstanding students, hand-picked from a variety of scientific backgrounds undertaking a structured first year training programme, before selecting a PhD project.

You will work alongside research leaders in functional nanomaterials in world-leading research laboratories across the University of Bristol. The first year training programme is built around a choice of 3 different research opportunities: two short Training Projects (each one lasting 12 weeks) leading to an Extended project, and final choice of PhD. This means that you will have direct contact with many different academics and areas of research, and can build up your CV for the next step in your career.

Alongside this research, you will have tailored training workshops to build up your fundamental knowledge; hands-on technical training on research equipment, and specialist training sessions on communication, problem-solving skills, teamwork, and the skills needed for managing people and projects - all essential for your future career. There are also regular Industrial Training modules with our industrial partners, designed to give you first-hand experience of solving real world problems.

We offer a strong focus on professional transferable skills alongside research throughout the lifecycle of your PhD, making you more employable in whatever field you choose to work in – our aim is to help you make the most of your potential as a postgraduate researcher and beyond.

The BCFN draws from more than 100 expert academics from many different departments: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Materials Science, Engineering and Medical Sciences at a top ranking University 2016 QS World Ranking - all of this in the heart of the city of Bristol - the best UK city to live in.
