Not since the 1950s has there been a more exciting time to work within the field of nuclear science and engineering. The Nuclear Sector Deal was published in 2018 and the industry is witnessing heavy investment.
While the decommissioning of legacy nuclear sites around the country continues to drive forward, ongoing investment is being made in both new nuclear build and small modular reactors. Nuclear will be an essential component in the country’s efforts to meet climate change targets; but to remain at the forefront of the industry the UK needs new Subject Matter Experts (SMEs).
GREEN will provide both academic- and industry-based research partnerships. A taught programme of learning, secondment opportunities, industrial co-supervision and a fully industry-based PhD project will shape you into the SME the nuclear industry needs.
This growing sector has an acute need for skilled nuclear scientists and engineers. Working alongside our 12 industry partners and in partnership with four more of the country’s leading nuclear universities, you will gain a deep theoretical and practical knowledge of nuclear fission and fusion for energy.
GREEN delivers comprehensive doctoral training across the whole fission fuel cycle, in addition to allied areas of fusion.

Applicants should be from the UK/EU. You should have obtained or be about to obtain a First or Upper Second class UK honours degree, or an overseas equivalent. The degree should be in a relevant area of science or engineering.
